Overtaking just as the speed limit increases

Strider, I think you're confusing a few aggressive idiots you've encountered with the real world, I don't think every single person you go to overtake will stamp their foot down.
Indeed, usually people I overtake aren't paying attention, are slow drivers, and I imagine that many don't even notice that I was behind them, beside them or in front of them! This 'stealth overtake' thing is something that would be used >5% of the time I think.
A nice fast car and being in the right gear always helps if you do encounter a plank though.
Another thing that annoys me is people who are oncoming flashing their headlights at you while you overtake, as if you're doing something dangerous. I ALWAYS have stacks of time to be back in my lane and flash back to these people in a nice friendly manner as if to say 'hello'!0 -
Another road rage thread with a pet hate of mine. Got to hate it when people overtake you as you're doing the speed limit (and I mean by sat nav not the under-reading speedo), and pull straight back in apparently without looking, just as the speed limit increases. It is exactly the point in time law abiding motorists want to put their foot down to make progress and get up to the new speed limit, but such overtakers often force you to do the sensible thing and not accelerate. It's like they have no forethought to consider that as the speed limit increases someone might want to increase speed.
Or is it just me who has experienced this?:rotfl:
As the highway code puts it:

Being overtaken. If a driver is trying to overtake you, maintain a steady course and speed, slowing down if necessary to let the vehicle pass. Never obstruct drivers who wish to pass. Speeding up or driving unpredictably while someone is overtaking you is dangerous. Drop back to maintain a two-second gap if someone overtakes and pulls into the gap in front of you.Always get a Qualified opinion - My qualifications are that I am OLD and GRUMPY:p:p0 -

I also play head on chicken if you do it when I'm driving the other way.
Don't assume I won't accelerate rather than brake either.
Even if you flash your lights when you're on my side of the road.
Feel free to tell me I shouldn't, but I like the Mad Max films.
Remeber you put yourself there first though, I've never crossed the road to play.
I like drivers like you, I don't flash first, but I can accelerate. If you flash I assume you want to play too.0 -
I often have to do a right turn onto a dual carriageway which shortly turns into a single carriageway. So, not only do I have to go from 0-60/70 in 0 seconds, I have to be careful of 2 lanes of traffic.
Just the other week, I feel I deserve the cheaper insurance I am getting due to my wiser age. When I saw a gap in traffic, I pulled out into the left lane and floored it. I noticed a car in my rear view mirror pull out into the right lane to overtake another car that was following me onto the dual carriageway. I knew my GTI could outpace the overtaking car before the two lanes merged but instead I decided to lift off to let him pass safely.
If I was a few years younger, I would have probably blocked/annoyed him in one go. There's no huge benefit of being 1 car ahead or blocking and annoying the driver behind.0 -
Rogerstone to Risca is probably most problematic, seems some can't be bothered getting up to 70 because they'd have to slow for the next roundabout. Will only get worse once Tesco opens. Also mucho pointless yellow rumble strips.
They have now made this a permanent 40 limit from the start of the rumble strips, presumably they think the rumble strips are not enough, or that the people who go to the new 24 hour Tescos at 4am will overshoot the roundabout. Rather pointless IMO, now everyone will do 40mph down that stretch and block up the right lane on their way to Tesco  Suppose many may say that doesn't make the road any different though :rotfl:0 -
Yet another reason for me to come home J30 -> Rudry -> Lower Machen -> Ochrwyth, or if heading to England to go via Cwmbran or Usk.
And yes those rumble strips are far too long which probably results in people ignoring them, and continuing to ignore them even when you reach the point that you actually need to think about slowing down. So now we get a 40 limit.
Will be glad of a new Tesco though. The one in Ystrad Mynach is crap.0
