Drivers who slow down to 10-20mph below the speed limit every time they approach a speed camera get on my nerves.

And lorries that insist on overtaking other lorries on hills at 1mph faster than the lorry they are overtaking.

    Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!
Monitron cameras on the A591 at Ings, just outside Kendal are the worst for this. Idiot tourists thinking 'oh cameras and slightly built up area, must be 30', despite the big 40 signs.

I was once doing 30, in a 30 zone. Actual speed 29-30 as I usually go with the needle just over 30, but many people don't do 30 through this particular stretch. Anyway, some youngish lad (not unlike myself :p , it does annoy me how many young lads can't drive, except me of course. :p) in his bright yellow megane started to overtake just before the NSL signs, then got irritated when he had to pull back in behind me as I accelerated up to, erm, 60, strangely enough.

Here's a common one that I get, anewman probably knows it, the 30 limit in Hafodyrynys heading for Pontypool.

Basically you have a very steep hill 60 limit, 2 lanes up, one lane down, then a 30 limit through the village and then another 60 limit.

Lots of people only do about 45-50 up this hill so I usually end up overtaking about 6 cars, then I have to slow for the 30 limit and the car behind is usually right up my chuff. If they're not then they will be by the time I'm approaching the 60 sign again.

Then I accelerate briskly back up to 60 and I don't see them again, unless there's a huge queue at the Pontypool roundabout, at which point they might turn up a couple of minutes later.

This doesn't just happen in the Nissan, happens even in the diesel Mundano.

So, somebody is in the process of overtaking you and you accelerate to thwart him. My amendment above is very apt.

To be fair, if you are overtaking someone as they come up to a speed limit change, the fact that they might speed up should be included in your overtaking plans.

This is nothing like the people who dawdle at 40 in a 60 and only speed up once they notice they're being overtaken.
  • Yeah its a tricky one.The person in front might be thinking"I've been sat at 30mph through this village, road is opening up and a nice NSL, foot down time" the person behind might be thinking "that bllody slowcoach in front, been doing 29mph for the past mile, nice bit of NSL coming up I am getting past them before they get the chance to hold me up on the bends"

I've been in both situations, had the tailgater sitting on my !!! who then overtakes me(speeding to do so) then holds me up on the NSL and been the one who overtakes after the speed limit change because the car in front looks like they are going to pootle along at 40mph when its perfectly safe to do more.
Rule of thumb is, if you see a tartan picnic blanket on the parcel shelf and a flat cap on the driver -if you don't get past(legally) when you can, you are going to be stuck behind them for miles.

If someone overtakes before the NSL sign then they are speeding, they are breaking the law and they are completely in the wrong.

It's a lovely black and white world I live in...

As have I. Just need to plan for what to do if they speed up "unexpectedly".

Yes, the megane was overtaking and thus speeding whilst still in the 30 zone. I didn't actually notice him starting to overtake until I'd got past the NSL signs and began to accelerate. I wouldn't deliberately stop someone overtaking, once I was up to speed he seemed quite happy behind me at 60.

Lack of situational awareness? What else aren't you aware of while driving? the pedestrian about to step off the curb for example?
Too many people drive in their own little bubble. Only use their mirrors when they want to overtake (normally 5 secs AFTER starting to pull out) and just don't have a clue about what is happening around them apart from 30 feet in front.

Yep and the Village with the 30 limit used to often have a mobile speed camera. I do relish in disappearing and leaving them miles behind when the 60 comes up though.

But if you end up stuck behind someone doing 40 all the way to Pontypool very annoying as either there's a bend or someone coming the other way making overtaking difficult, think I only ever managed one safe overtake on it. Have come around bends on this road to see people my side of the road . Probably just need a faster car to drop down a gear and floor it. Plus if you try turn off and take the old road instead it's not any faster than sticking behind the 40mph everywhere person on the new one.
