  • I am an Ex student, i started a 4 year course in 2001 and took the full student loan for all 4 years of my studies.

i graduated in july 2006 and started work in november 2006.

as i started work earning above the £15000 threshold i was expecting to start repayments in april 2007 but as yet i still haven't had any repayments taken.

i understand that it's the HMRC's responsibility to inform my company of the need to repay but as you can imagine i'm getting very anxious about a having a large loan gaining interest that i'm not repaying.

i have tried contacting my local tax office but that hasn't helped.

    what shoud i do?

    ANY SUGGESTIONS?
  • Hi,

im currently a student with a student loan, after university i'd really like to start and run my own business. problem is, i may need a bank loan or a loan for funding. does having a student loan-debt affect me in any way - will they tell me to p off???

also is there any business start up tips or advise on this site. i've looked and looked but cant find anything - if you know of anything please point me to it

    cheers
  • Martin I need your help!

I am off to university in September to do a masters degree and I have been looking to see if I'm entitled to anything. In the last 2 days I have found out that I missed applying for a university scholarship by 2 days and that because I am over 24 and doing a masters degree I am not entitled to any financial support. I have found out that I may be entitled to some help with my childcare and also a £30 adult learning grant. £30 won't even cover my Tesco's shop! I got so cross yesturday that I emailed my local MP explaining the situation and that I didn't want a hand out I just wanted some financial support like other students.

Is there any advice or guidance you can give me. I really don't won't to have to take a bank loan for the money I need to complete my education but right now it seems that will be my only option and I am now wondering whether going to university is going to be viable.

    Please help!

    Charlotte
  • Hi,

A long time ago I remember hearing that student loans are wiped if you perform a particular job i.e police etc. Is this a myth?!

    Thanks

  • I'm not sure if this is a stupid question or not, so sorry in advance if it is! I just recieved confirmation from the student loan company that I have got my tuition fee loan, maintenance loan and grant but do I get these every year or are they just a one off? I assume that I get the tuition fee loan every year but does the same apply to the maintenance loan and grant? For instance in year one I get a loan of £6,000, in year two this increases to £12,000 etc?

The article also shows the maintenance loans increasing each year, so if I do get a 'new loan' each year does it increase in line with inflation or do I keep getting the amount I got in year one?

Thanks for taking the time to read this! :j

you apply each year - but where did you hear the loan gets doubled in year 2????
I personally get the max grant and close to the max loan as I'm a mature student but as far as I know you get the same each year.
(how much debt would you like at the end!! this is more than enough for me :o)

I didn't say it very clearly, but what I meant was that in year two I will owe £12,000, ie. over the two years I have borrowed £12,000 (£6,000 each year).

Just to clarify I have to reapply for my student loans each year?

Oh right... sorry. yes that's correct - you will owe £12,000 for two years loans (if you spend it though! some people try and save most of it... that's what I'll try... whether that actually happens we'll have to see how things go , lol :o)

and to confirm that yes you do have to reapply each year!
I'm assuming it's the same date too.. ie: March
