  • can anyone help me decide what to do? a little advice would be great, my hubby is much younger than myself, infact i met him when he was on a break at uni, he had a student loan but decided not to return to uni but to marry me instead. i have two autistic sons and a daughter by a previous marriage, he works part time and helps mewith the caring, so his student loan isnt getting any smaller and wont as we are only ever going to work part time, and for low wages, can i get the debt written off, its been 10 years.
totally debt free:j and mortgage free too 2010
  • When did he start the course? 1998-2005 start would mean it would be wiped when he turned 65!
  • Does anyone know when SLC revise the National Average Earnings figures for people with pre 1998 student loans? The figure usually increases each year, but in which month?

    thanks

  • I am on incapacity following an accident, but hope shortly to receive a lump sum in settlement. Where do I stand with regard to my student loan? I am not working, and am not likely to be for some time, but presumably I have some obligation to pay something to them out of any money I win - is anyone able to clarify this for me please?

I know that the student loan company will not accept a reduced settlement to clear the debt which is already a few years old, and I was surprised to learn this, particularly as the likelihood of earning over the threshold and them getting repayments is fairly slim.

The SLC only require you to make payments on earnings over the threshold limit. I would argue that a settlement would only fall into this if it were for loss of earnings and even then it's a bit dubious to be honest.

Are you pre-1998? I can't think of any other reason why you might try to settle early.

Thanks for that, as I suspected. I just don't understand THEIR logic for not settling! Not my problem I suppose.

Sorry if I've done this wrong, but there was no thanks key for me to click onto!
  • Hello everyone.

I really hope someone on here can give me some advice!
I am 30 years old and have just recently had a partial recovery from some serious long term health problems. I want to go back to university to study a Social Work Degree but I am having some problems with funding. My main problem is that I have already been at uni for 1 year and 1 semester and subsequently already taken funding for that time (student loan). After speaking to Student Loans I have been informed that this means I can only get another 2 years of monies. This leaves me with a year shortfall in terms of fees and living costs. I have no savings and am claiming Incapacity Benefit, DLA and Housing Benefit.

I have had some ideas as to how i can afford to do this - thanks to the info already on this site - but I was wondering if anyone has anymore!!! Or perhaps any suggestions as to where I can go for advice!

    Thanks in advance

  • When I was hard up at uni I wot a hardship grant (applied directly to the uni). They wanted to see all my bank statements etc. but then gave me a few grand! All uni's are different, but from speaking to my friends, most offer a similar scheme. It's a grant so I didn't have to pay it back.
  • My 22 year old son is due too start Uni next year.
He has been living and earning independently since he was 17 so will be applying for loans and grants independently
However at present he does not have a good Credit rating
Will this mean he will have difficulty getting Student Loans?
Also How do I start a new thread?

I am a current student I have been given only the 3385 for maintenace loan and will have to pay fees myself, i am 22 and have worked since 2002, the student finance says that i did not earn enough to fully support myself, but i earnt too much to be able to claim any income support or other benifits, i would like to appeal against the decision and would like to know clearly what the procedure is or by what other tools i can fight this unfair decision. thanks
