I took out student loans - 1996,1997 & 1998 when I attended university as a mature student. I have never earned more than the set income and have always defered. I am correct in assuming that when I reach 60 in 2010, the loan is wiped clean.0

I am a current student I have been given only the 3385 for maintenace loan and will have to pay fees myself, i am 22 and have worked since 2002, the student finance says that i did not earn enough to fully support myself, but i earnt too much to be able to claim any income support or other benifits, i would like to appeal against the decision and would like to know clearly what the procedure is or by what other tools i can fight this unfair decision. thanks
Have you applied for the student fee loan? You normally apply for this at the same time as your maintenence loan.
The student fee loan is paid direct to the university to cover your fees.
The maintenence loan is to cover your living expences.£2 Coins Savings Club 2012 is £4

My daughter is 21 and has just started an online Fashion Marketing degree at London College of Fashion. She wants to study from home as she has depression problems. We spoke to the LEA in August about appliying and they said it was a pasrt time course so we had to wait 2 weeks into her course to apply and that we could then apply for Disability funding also. Anyway when she went to London to do her weeks induction they noticed her reading was not good and the Uni paid for a dyslexia assesment that was last week. They said she was quite badly dyslexic and they would write to the LEA about funding. In the meantime however the LEA said she would not get funding as it was not a recognised course and therefore would not qualify for the Disability grants either!.
I have spoken to the LEA and UNI many times this week and seem to be being given the runaround. Now the course attracts full time fees £3070.00 and one of her fellow students has got full funding from her LEA. I have looked at the government websites and although is says distance learning is treated differently it does not say how.
How do we get past this? I think she is entitled as it is exactly the same course as the college is running for resident students except that it is online.
When I spoke to the Disability commission they said to go ahead and apply for that portion anyway and I am tempted to apply for the full time assistance aswell. HELP!!0 -
i'm going to start uni next year and i've aquired myself a bit of a sub standard credit rating, so will any of the loans, accounts, overdrafts etc.... be unavalible to be because of this?

Every student has access to the same amount/forms of money, regardless of credit score (it's not even looked at).
At the other end, any Student Finance debt you accrue does not affect your credit rating.
So, you'll be fine.0 -
Hi all, wonder if anyone can help me.
I'm a part time student on a 3 year Foundation degree, I've claimed my study grant from the LEA and when I wrote to the council to notify them about the money (I'm on Housing & Council tax benefits) they said that the money was disregarded as it wasn't income but that I should be eligible for a council tax waiver, ergo not have to pay ANY council tax.
I contacted the council but they have no idea what I'm talking about, anyone had any exprerience of this?0 -
It appears that you cannot make a part repayment to reduce your repayments unless you do it in September! If you have some extra cash (I know stupid statement). Get the interest off it in a good svings account and then pay off in September.
How rubbish is that?
I need to reduce my payments each month for a new mortgage. The student loan is my biggest payment and I can't reduce it til September.
Graduates - be warned0 -
I have one of the older pre-'98 loans and was just wondering if once I reach a point where I want to pay it back and have the full amount saved, is it possible to pay this back in one lump sum? I dont really fancy the idea of paying it back over 5 years to be honest. I wont be in that position for some months yet so just wanted to see if anyone had experience of doing this or even if it was possible?0

I started uni in 1997 and had 4 consecutive loans until I graduated in 2001. For the first 3 years, I deferred payment as I was earning under the threshold. However, for the past 4 years, I have not heard anything from the student loans company asking for payment or to confirm that I am still earning under the threshold. I have changed jobs 3 times and for 18 months was earning considerably over the threshold but still not a peep from them. I checked with the payroll dept in my last job and they confirmed no student loan payments were coming out of my salary. Why is this?0
