Too much oil screws the car? Christ! I only just worked out how to check the oil and top it up!

Let me get this right - check oil with engine cool? wipe dippy, stick dippy. If level below dippy flat bit - add oil. Use oil as per manual or nice man at halfords says.

Thanks OP for reminding me I need to book a service! Service booked!

Distance between bottom of flat bit to top of flat bit on dippy = 1 litre of oil, if oil level is below flat bit add 1/2 litre of oil, wait to see what the resultant new level is before adding any more.

Too much oil will turn the oil into a froth, this will effectively stop the engine from being lubricated properly

All damage from lack of lubrication will be possible

Bearing damage, big end bearing damage, piston ring damage and whatever else you can think of.

What absolute tosh! Any car that requires that level of attention should be sent back to the main dealer! If I needed to add more than 1 litre of oil in 6,000 miles I would be worrying (only had one car that actually needed ANY topping up). Is it only me that thinks that this whole thread is a wind-up?

I wish it was a wind up lol.

Also when the interrogate the ECU I think they will be able to see how high the engine revved, and the engine will almost certainly be sent back to Swindon or Japan to be inspected fully by some white coated engineers.

Remember we are taking about Honda here, not a used car salesman. Honda will want to know the cause of the failure.

    darn it :(

Its today that the car gets looked at by the garage. Lets hear the outcome OP - we're all waiting, with fingers crossed, for the post mortem.

Hopefully you're down the pub celebrating and not drowning your sorrows

I used to have an Audi A4 and it actually told you in the handbook that it needed topped up by 500ml around every 2000 miles - although we never managed to last as much as 2000 miles. It was a lovely car, we had it for 5 years and it was well looked after, never thrashed and it was serviced regularly - it just needed topping up a lot - and the oil wasn't cheap either. So yes, there are some cars that need topping up quite a bit.

Anybody that has owned any number of different VW's will understand about oil consumption, a few years ago i saw a letter from VW uk indicating that 1 litre per thousand miles was within tolerances.

I had a Subaru Legacy that used about 1 litre per 3 thousand miles for about the first 20k then settled down to about 1/2 litre between oil changes.

Though when driven hard round town it used to use a bit more, once didn't check it for a fortnight and when i got remembered it was just on the minimum, though I did do 1500 miles.

Anybody that thinks and engine is faulty when it uses oil is wrong, some do, some don't, some use more than others of the same type, some less.

My mate has a 2.2 Honda Odyysey, a jap import, it hasn't used more than a litre in three years.

My Mondeo TDCi uses none between oil changes.

My wifes Clio DCi, uses about 1/2 litre every 5k.

I had an Omega TD Auto years ago, massive miles, 200k plus, it had two different specs of oil you could use, 0W40 ( I think, used Mobil 1 diesel oil) and the other was 5W40(again from memory, I used a Comma SynerD oil).

Both oils where fully synthetic, due to the fact the engine was the 2.5, 6 cylinder from BMW, when using the Mobil1 it used a litre per thousand, when I used the SynerD it used none.

Sometimes the oil viscosity makes a difference to oil consumption, if I had a car that seemed to use a lot then I would go for a slightly thicker oil as long as it was within the recommended specs for the engine.

The OP has learned a lesson, don't add oil before making sure it needs it, and don't listen to halfwits in a shop, as selling oil doesn't make you an expert on it, all their information and knowledge comes from the data book below the counter or from the computer, and we all know how reliable such information can be.

I always chose the oil I want by doing research before buying it, too many !!!!wits work in these car accessory stores for me to take their word for it, I went into a Renault Main Dealer recently and forgot to write down the specs for the oil before hand, bought the oil and air filters and asked for the correct oil for the car involved, the recommended one didn't seem right, so didn't buy then, after checking at home the bloke was completely wrong.

I have also seen these blokes sell the wrong oil to somebody with a Ford Zetec engine in their car, which is madness bacause using the wrong oil in them causes all kinds of problems to the top end.

lol, thanks AD - The car went in for service / check today. They said they suspected a particular type of fault but were referring to higher Honda people and will get back to me when they have an answer.

The receipt just says "will get back to you ref blue smoke" :(

Unfortunately when the receptionist read out the theoretical diagnosis on the phone and I didn't quite catch it all. the words valve and leak were used I think.....

Anyway I got given the car back today so they seem fine about me continuing to drive it. I'm just in limbo now.
