  • Disconnecting the battery wont clear the codes, it'll just turn the EML off on a Honda.
  • Wonder if the OP will come back with an update on this one...?

These must have been new old stock as 3.5 V8's with carbs were only produced up to 1976, then they switched to fuel injected units.
I bought a Convoy with factory-fit V8 and my mechanic ran the engine number through a database. It was made in 1975, the van was made in 1996. It went like stink even with an LPG conversion.

Not sure when they actually made the engines, but they were brand new engines fitted by the Special Vehicles Division.

The main reason for the carbs was the brakes weren't good enough and the EFi had too much power, the LAS LDV's actually had to restrictors fitted, one under the carb to reduce airflow, and a restrictor in the exhaust.

The argument was, believe it or not, on who would pay to upgrade the brakes, due to the 14" wheels being as large as they could go without clearance issues.

The 3.5 V8 was a bit of a bitsa special really.

They tried an axle break of some kind on the T reg, but they where just plain wierd to drive, when you pressed the brake the back dipped like you had pulled on the handbrake a little light came on on the dash and there was a slight delay before the brake would release.

So they went with the 3.5 V8 again, I believe we bought some of the last few 3.5 engines as spare engines, I would think the reason the engine numbers showed up as mid 70's might just be a error, maybe caused by the fact that the V8 was in 3.9 and 4.0 form later on.

Maybe they just continued with the old sequence of numbers, in good old Rover tradition of making do, the engines we had in our vehicles where definately brand new.

I actually drove a few when they where fresh out the box, nice and fruity.
  • Strange but true, I'm positive there was a v8 ambulance on ebay the other day there.

That one looks to be an ex Hampshire or Surrey Ambulance, from memory they had the manual gearbox fitted to most if not all their V8's, apparently they where rather enjoyable to drive in the wet.

You could only really drift the auto's if you where hard on the brakes when turning in, nothing like a braking drift in 3 tonnes of Ambulance, that put hair on your chest..........even for the ladies.

Were the engine blocks painted Admiralty Grey (aka powder blue) by any chance? The restrictors under the carbs were standard equipment for military spec V8s in Land Rover products. If the engines were ex. MoD spares stock (held by or returned to Rover/LDV) that would account for the engine dates.

I'll put my anorak over there!
  • Hi folks, thought I'd let you know I got the car back today fixed and spotless!

It seems I have survived unscathed. I know some people think I deserve to be keel hauled but I can't express how relieved I am.

    Merry Christmas :D
