I'm screwed

  • I'm not a mechanic, but I can't see what permanent engine damage would be caused by overfilling with oil. The smoke is probably just the oil that's overflowed out of the dipstick holder onto the engine block, and it will burn off eventually.

I won't go into the whys and wherefors about missing the servicing - you've been beat up enough about that, I reckon.

My friend was a checkout monkey for a filling station as his first job. An old dear asked him if he could help fill her car with oil as it was low. So he nipped outside and chucked a hole carton of oil (maybe 5L) in. A day later an irate woman came back, her engine was severely damaged.
Like you, I'm not a mechanic(and neither was my mate obviously) but I think too much oil can do damage, especially when the oil pump does what it's supposed to and builds pressure, that coupled with the expansion from the heat of the engine.

If you have ****ed the engine that would be a first for a Honda vTech engine!

    I don't suppose there's an award.

I've broken it, I know I have, the revs were going through the roof before I had the excess drained out. I'm so screwed :(

If you over fill a diesel with oil sometimes the excess gets sucked up from the sump and the engine continues to run and over-rev, the sump oil acting as fuel. Eventually the sump runs dry and the engine is wrecked. The only way to stop the engine if this happens is to stall it by putting the car into a high gear and letting the clutch out quickly.

It is a false economy not to service cars.

Too much oil screws the car? Christ! I only just worked out how to check the oil and top it up!

Let me get this right - check oil with engine cool? wipe dippy, stick dippy. If level below dippy flat bit - add oil. Use oil as per manual or nice man at halfords says.

Thanks OP for reminding me I need to book a service! Service booked!

Is there likely to be permanent damage if the sump doesn't run dry? I mean why is it still burning the oil when the oil level drops? (I've had the excess drained out)

How high did it rev, and for how long?

Diesel revving on its own is usually a sign of oil entering the inlet.

It is actually running on its own engine oil, Diesel engines can do this until it runs out of
oil or actually explodes. Pistons, Rods, Crank can break. Depends on the weakest part of the engine.
