Um. Why are people saving up all their pennies? Why don't you just spend them? That way you'll have to draw money out of the bank less often.

Just go to your bank, ask for some money bags and take them home.

Seperate the money, put it in the bags according to the totals on the outside.

Go to the bank and bring some spare change just incase you miscounted, deposit it in your account.

But the nearest branch of my bank is 60 miles away......

I use an old pickled onion jar to save mine. It's a smell you just can't get rid of. The smell of the copper plus the years old pickled onion vinegar is one of most disgusting things to have on your hands and it takes ages to wash it out.

But I STILL prefer that to paying 8% commission to coinstar!

Set of lazy bug*ers, the lot of yer!

So do banks actually have policies on how many bags of change they will accept, or is it more a local policy and dependant on what sort of mood the teller is in?

I think it's just easier and less temptation to chuck a few pennies and small change in there than it is to cut £10 out of your budget.. as the pennies etc don't feel like real money until you've counted them up and seen how much you have.

That makes absolutely no financial sense, if you're saving £10 in change, it's exactly the same as cutting £10 out of your budget! (or whatever the amount is) And storing it in a jar means you lose out on interest you'd get by cutting the budget and saving it in a high interest account. Let alone all the faffing and potential 8% cut you lose by bagging it up and using coinstar....

I don't see how it's less tempting to have actual money lying around the house, than having it in a savings account that you can't access until you transfer it across to your current account 3 days later?!

Bear in mind us blokes can't handle a huge amount of loose change because we only have things like pockets and a wallet - not the tardis-style leviathan carrying devices you ladies call handbags :p

ha ha fair enough! Still, my change never builds up as I spend it rather than breaking notes...my tardis-style leviathan carrying device needs a clean out though, change or not!

Our junior school started a banking scheme with the Yorkshire bank which I think was a fantastic idea for kids. Everyone brought there pocket money in on a monday and we would all sort it out together as a class, total it, fill in the transaction forms and the headteacher would take it down to the bank. it was my first ever bank account and it felt really cool.

My nanas handbag was a proper handbag - lead lined and with the same capacity as a transit van. She threw all her copper in there during the week (to help improve the weight for handbag to hangbag battle confrontations), and on Sunday night she'd give it to us to clear out and all the cash in there was ours to take in and bank the next day. Emptying the handbag out was like winning the slot machines in las vegas - piles of cash and I used to love it. It was even worth fishing out the snotty hankies, nipped cigarettes and false teeth.

it made me the man I am today. :o
