Humax 9300 320gb Digital TV Recorder

Hi everyone, can somebody help me?
I am a going to subscribe to virgin. I would really like a + box. But all their + boxes are with HD and HD subscription and activation. I neighter have an hd tv nor interested in hd channels. I saw this above box for around £150 on the net. Can I use this box to record channel in virgin connection. or is this only for freeview channels.

That's a Freeview+ box, requiring an aerial connection.

The only boxes you can use on Virgin are those supplied by Virgin.

You can still technically use other cable boxes to record and view fta channels if you subscribe to any package, but this goes against your agreement.

But on this box all premium channels would be scrambled, subscribed or not, since Nagra 3 hit your area.
  • Thanks for your replies guys. I simply thought a digital TV recorder is like a video recorder without the cassettes. Is that not the case?

I'm afraid not. You need a box with the correct tuners for the service, whether it's Freeview, Freesat, Sky or Cable.

You''ve got it wrong about VCR's. A VCR doesn't record from your TV. It has it's own analogue tuner and records from that. That's how you can watch one channel while recording another.
If you want PVR facilities, why not just use either Freesat or Freeview with the appropriate Humax box?
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

The only way you can do this is to buy a DVD Recorder. You should then be able to connect the Virgin box to the DVD Recorder by scart and record from it. However you would only be able to record what is actually shown on the Virgin box at the time.

UNLESS you have a RF bypass fitted to the back of the cable box. This 'strips off' the normal Analog terrestrial channels,BBC1 ect, & supplies these to your TV.
However NTL/VM were, when I worked for them, reluctant to fit these unless the customer was migrating from Analogue to Digital or it was already fitted on a service swap out.
I must stress tho that these will only work on areas that still have the Analogue service running side by side with the digital.
  • Thanks to everyone. It is a bit clearer now. I was also looking at this dtvrecorder http://www.comet.co.uk/shopcomet/product/680052/HUMAX-HDR-FOX-T2/tab/specification. It says "Viewing card required for additional channels". How can I get these channels?
