Freeview+ HD Box

I wonder if anyone can help, to cut a long story short I signed up for Sky and the instaler said he couldn't do the job because I wanted the wires down the chimney and he said he wasn't allowed on the roof, health and safety! So now I am thinking of going the Freeview+ HD box route. I want to be able to record, pause tv etc. We have a HD ready Tv so thought a HD box might be a good idea. I have phoned virgin, who we are with at the min, and got a cheaper deal off them. We can't have a V+ box as I don't want wires around the room!
Freeview+ HD boxes are very expensive so I wanted some opinions as I don't want to make a very expensive mistake. Anybody got any advice on which box to go for? I have done a bit of research on the internet but its all a bit technical so could do with some advice in english! Was thinking about going to currys or comet and asking advice but its bit "pot luck" who you get and wether they know what they are talking about!

Health and safety when it comes to roofs is well needed, you can employ an independent installer to fit the Sky dish and run cables for you and then resign with Sky and the Sky installer will just deliver and set up the box.

Same with Virgin, if you run your own leads to the external virgin box then you can install where you want.

With freeview boxes my choice would be Humax.

Humax have not yet released their Freeview HD PVR, though it is imminent. Expect to pay well over £300 initially though.
For a Freeview PVR I would not consider anything other than a Hummy.
Edit: the Fox HDR-T2 is now available : £299 at Richer Sounds.

Many thanks for your help. I have decided to go for the Humax HDR-FOXT2, I have found it at Argos and luckly they have one in stock at my local store. It's £299 but at the moment Argos are giving £20 in vouchers for a £100 spend or more which will help with the christmas shopping. I did find it £10 cheaper at comet but only if ordered for delivery, so I would have to wait plus no £20 Argos vouchers!
I usually leave technical stuff to my husband but I wanted to do this as a suprise for him. I have spent hours reserching on the internet but your sugestions pointed me in the right direction in the begining.

Hopefully your aerial will be good enough to pick up the HD channels and Freeview HD is available in your area.

My aunt had the non HD Humax PVR for 4 years and got the majority of the channels - missed some like Film 4. Her box was giving her major problems and she decided to get the new HD Humax.

Unfortunately the HD channels were unobtainable as her loft aerial wasn't giving enough signal level to pick them up. She now has a new aerial installed and is able to get them all.

Until recently, I'd have recommended Humax (we bought their original Freeview recorder and still have it, although it hasn't been completely fault and trouble free). But if I was buying a Freeview+ HD recorder today, I'd buy this from Tesco in a flash. £200, dual-tuner, 160GB Freeview HD recorder with iPlayer, Sky Player (and hopefully 4OD soon) and much other on demand TV from FetchTV. Bargain.

It's a 320GB hard drive, not 160GB. 160GB wouldn't go very far when recording in HD. The Humax Freeview HD PVR is 500GB, which I think is a more sensible minimum for HD.
Do you know who makes this box, as Technika is just Tesco's budget own brand?

Humax 9300 320gb Digital TV Recorder

Hi everyone, can somebody help me?
I am a going to subscribe to virgin. I would really like a + box. But all their + boxes are with HD and HD subscription and activation. I neighter have an hd tv nor interested in hd channels. I saw this above box for around £150 on the net. Can I use this box to record channel in virgin connection. or is this only for freeview channels.
