Sheesh, you guys are a hard bunch.

    a) I'm not looking for free tyres. I am happy to pay for them 'cause, well, they're on my car!

    b) The fitting fee of one tyre as a goodwill gesture is ridiculous. I want the fitting charge for all 3 refunded as the garage service was appaling. The first guy I spoke to tried to fob me off and was willing to let me drive away a second time with an unsafe tyre. If I hadn't been told that garages pray on motoring clueless women and to stand my ground, I would have driven away.

    c) The tyre coming off at 70mph would most likely have been fatal as it's a front tyre.

    d) The tyre could have come off at 30mph too if I had hit a pot hole and still injured myself and others. I would be liable for their injuries as my car had the unsafe tyre.

hartcjhart, there's no need to be so rude. I am not looking for compensation, I am looking for a goodwill payment. There's a difference.

Not quite sure why you would have needed to drive at speeds of up to 70MPH. It's not mandatory to do that speed on a motorway.

    Don't forget the children.

Will nobody think of the children please????

Yes, up to 70mph. As in I would need to travel somewhere between 50mph and 70mph. You can get pulled over for driving too slowly on a motorway ya know.

I don't think you should stop at just seeking compensation for the accident that didnt happen, I think you should write to your local MP, contact the police and also demand that the tyre fitter be flogged.

The company concerned should buy you a whole new car as you car may have been a write off if the tyre had popped, they should also landscape your front garden and replace the wall as this could have been damaged if you had crashed into it.

I am currently in the throes of writing to them myself to demand compensation as I could have been in front of your car when the tyre blew and so deserve some money for the stress I am now suffering from even thinking about it.

Goodwill payment is just that and it doesn’t look like there is any between you and the tyre company.

From a legal point of view I’d say you are entitled to any out of pocket expenses you incurred as a result of their bad workmanship.

If you’d crashed these would be the costs of the car/injuries etc, thankfully you noticed and took it back so your time and travel expenses is all they have to cover.

Frankly I do think you should get compo and the tyre supplying company is nuts if it doesn't offer you cash to keep quiet. If as you say there was a substantial gap between the rim and the bead and the guy tried to fob you off instead of apologising profusely and fixing it, he is a dangerous moron who has no business in the tyre fitting game.
Equally, the tyre supplying company is using far too many of these ill-trained, uninspected dumps to be the front line of their business and are very ill advised to let this go.

Come to think of it, I didn't actually get an apology from the garage! I got one from the tyre company but not the garage.

I'm only bringing it to the attention of the tyre company because the guy at the garage was willing to let me drive off for a second time with the wonky tyre and they need to be aware that one of their fitting partners are seriously incompetent.

All I'm looking for is the fitting fee for all of the tyres back as I'm loathed to pay the garage after their treatment of me.

harveybobbles, that's for the benefit of people who don't know what a goodwill payment is.

I sincerely hope that your partner is never put in the same situation as myself. I can't imagine that they'd enjoy the lack of sensitivity.
