Well you got that right
it was/is a SONY con and not the retailers.0 -
Have been looking around for a new TV of late and came across this offer from John Lewis.
I cant post links but if you search for "Sony Bravia KDL37EX403U John Lewis" it's the top result.
Seems like a lot of TV for the money, but my knowledge/understanding of the TV market is sparse to say the least!
I was wondering if anyone had any opinions on it? Good/bad TV? Good/bad price? Can you forsee any problems with claiming back the VAT?
Thanks
Not used the TV, but John Lewis price is not the cheapest (although by no means the most expensive; £899 on Freemans.com!).
http://www.comparetvprices.co.uk/ms/KDL37EX403/ - VAT back applies at Amazon as well as others have stated, so probably your best bet for that model.
Although I too have noticed Sony prices creeping up since their VAT back "promotion" was launched.0 -
The advantage with John Lewis is that the price includes a 5-year guarantee.0

JLP is £549 (£467 after vat back) with a 5 year warranty
Amazon is £589-99 (£502 after cashback) with a one year warranty
When you click on Amazon from your link (comparetvprices) the price is £589-99.

JLP wins hands down.
Even if Amazon were cheaper, you`ve got to ask how much a 5 year guarantee is worth.
If these tv`s go wrong they cost an arm and a leg to repair.0 -

Yeah, the guarantee is a worthwhile consideration. Do John Lewis still do the price match thing as well?
Price has changed since earlier; was defnitely £449 on Amazon when I looked (looks like Amazon has now sold out as it's only available through a 3rd party seller).0 -
JLP price match rival high street stores which do have internet sites.
But that rules out the likes of Amazon.

So, if you see or buy a product from us and find it cheaper with a high street competitor (that excludes online-only or mail order businesses such as Dixons, Amazon or Play.com, who don’t have shops), as long as their service conditions are comparable, such as delivery charges and guarantee terms, then we´ll match that price for you when you buy, or refund the difference for up to 28 days afterwards if you´ve already purchased.0 -
I bought a Sony 32" TV before Christmas and got the VAT back today, paid into my account by BACS. Its a bit of a con for the unwary customer who purchased in good faith as the VAT isn't the full amount; its paid at a net rate of 14.89% not 17.5%. This means that on a VAT amount of £87.49 which I paid at the point of purchase, I only got £74.47 back. Now that I look at it , this is explained in very small print on the leaflet, but as far as I am concerned its a big con by Sony, given that they also bumped the price of the TV up around the same time as they introduced this offer. Goodbye Sony; a loyal customer is now going to buy Panasonic from now on.:mad:0

I have worked out that your TV cost you £499.99 by dividing the £74.47 you got back by 0.175 to give me your pre-VAT price of £425.54. VAT is added to the pre-VAT price, it is never 17.5% of the purchase price, it is:
1 - ( 1 / (1 + 0.175) ) = 0.148936 or 14.89% as stated in the small print.
I miscalculated mine too when I first did it but read all the stuff and realised I would get a lower amount than I first expected.
The whole point about VAT is it is Value Added TaxIf at first you don't succeed, try, try, try - oh bu99er that just cheat0 -

It isn't really Sony's fault that you're not very good at maths.0
