Carbon monoxide in all fuels. People should have a CO monitor fixed in the room.
Those two stories appear to relate to the wood pellets - they seem to be more toxic than just wood. I should think the first chap was actually burnt as it says he died of "his injuries". Dreadful.
zyg, unusual that it should affect you so badly from that distance. When I was a child, we had thick yellow smog every winter from solid fuel and it did seem to finish off a lot of elderly people and those with chest conditions.0 -
Would love one but costly, though if you could make your own pellets perhaps do-able.
the pellets are made from compressed wood sawdust and are about 6% moisture, hence the very low waste. They cost about £240 a tonne and are bagged so easy to carry but cannot be too manhandled as the pellets have to remain whole. I think we are using about 9 kg a day for heating and hot water but less if the sun is out as the house gets warm from the sun and it also gives the water a boost via the solar panels. The sun seems to heat the store water (bottom 3/4 of the tank) to about 35 c at the moment
Our house is category 5 and pretty well zero carbon. Very unusual and a prototype0 -
The £125 plopped into my bank account overnight. This is a day when this extra payment should come into its own - we got the snow at last, days after the rest of the UK! No need to go out - DH went to Tesco yesterday, said it was 'heaving'. We are warm and comfortable and have all we need.
While I was talking to my swimming teacher earlier about not going for my lesson - he said 'don't even think about it' - an old lady from down the street plodded past. She was suitably clad for the weather, thick coat with fur-lined hood and wellington boots, but why on earth go out on a morning like this? What is so urgent? DH and I have driven in all sorts of awful weather and I remember it from when I lived in the Pennines. This weather, we don't go out. My eldest GD is different - she has a very active outdoor life and last week I helped her get new boots.Ær ic wisdom funde, ær wearð ic eald.

I got my letter on Friday, the money dropped into our current account today. OH hasn't had his letter, but his £125 arrived with mine.0

Mine dropped into my bank account this morning. Now all I have to do is decide what to waste it on. Gin, bingo, give it away ? Could have done with a new sled this morning to pull the dog on because the snow was up to his armpits when we went out for half an hour's exercise.
Decisions, decisons.....................I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)

It has come on to snow again, and DH is out. He got his £125 today and he wanted a second-hand laptop for when we go away. He was offered one for £150 from a guy who is clearing out an office, and he's gone to get it.Ær ic wisdom funde, ær wearð ic eald.

Well, it's better than buying a new one at £400 or thereabouts. Also a darned sight better than spending it on bingo or a three-legged horse.Ær ic wisdom funde, ær wearð ic eald.
