  • I will be using ours to buy 1000kg of wood pellets which we will use to fuel our wood burning stove over the whole winter

These ought to be banned, one of our neighbours has one and every time its used the fumes get on my chest, makes me really ill.
The only thing that is constant is change.

I will spend most of my Winter Fuel Allowance on wine, women and song. The rest I shall waste.

LOL - well, that's one way to keep warm!

Even if I don't put mine away specifically for the gas bill (also pay by monthly dd), I will keep it in savings of some sort for future gas bills. Every year we hear that fuel bills are going up and up. Lately I've been living above my means with house maintenance, teeth and such like, so need to be very careful of how my money is managed.

I wouldn't dream of giving it for Christmas presents for anyone, but, of course I agree that it's up to the individual what they do with theirs.

  • Very funny, Ken. Yes, shouldn't have been opening those bottles with my teeth.

    I realise that now.

The allowance should be paid in the form of a means tested discount on the heating bill, this would stop the people who dont need it getting it i.e ex-pats and the well off who definatly dont need it.

And why don't ex-pats need it?

To take one popular destination for expats-it is COLD in the winter in Spain, especially if you are at an altitude of 1000 metres! And many Spanish houses, especially older ones, have neither adequate heating nor insulation.

Many would say that if you are a pensioner and have paid your dues like any other pensioner, then it shouldn't matter where you spend your retirement, and you should still have the heating allowance like any other British pensioner.

Also, unless you become an expat when you are already over retirement age and already in receipt of the heating allowance, you don't get it anyway.

Its not a bottomless pit, its got to stop somewhere. The majorty of people who move abroad at pension age do so as a lifestyle choice and can well afford to do without the extra cash.

People also chose to retire to Bournemouth or Cornwall as a lifestyle choice. Should they not get it either?

If they already have enough money, no. But at least they spend the cash in this country thus keeping business's going here rather that abroad.
I notice that you have property here and abroad so i dont think you should qualify.
Please dont think this is a personal attack on you just my opinion as the resources we have left in this country need to be used with care untill we are back on our feet.(this could take a while since we have to bale out ireland)
