You missed it, on a rain soaked November 19th, but the market and everything is now in place on the streets

Thanks stixman, however i posted that back in October.

Although, i did miss it cos i was in London that day anyway

Visited the Winter Wonderland yesterday, bit of a dear do with the kids wanting to go on all the rides and at £1.50 a go left me a bit skint, but a nice atmosphere there, can imagine it being really nice when it's dark.

I'm glad the Kingsway has been sorted, at least for xmas, as i believe Phase 2 starts in the New Year. I haven't driven down there yet, i usually park in the Strand and i went into town the other day and just walking on the Kingsway confused me, may have to take a very late drive down there one night when there is no traffice about, to familiarise myself with the layout:rotfl:

    thanks again

Thought it was pretty rubbish myself - we went yesterday too! All DD was interested in was the big wheel, but after queuing with DH for ages the flipping thing broke down so she couldn't go on it (cue hysterics). She did go on one of the other kiddies rides which was worth the £1.50 just to see her face as the motorbike she was on bombed around the little track!!!

It was all a bit scruffy and totally over-rated I thought though. The ice-rink was the size of a postage stamp and there seemed to be roped off bits everywhere - plus you've got the enormous building site that is the ex-leisure centre next door. How anyone can think it's better than Cardiff's winter wonderland I don't know.

And it looks like we made it once again
Yes it looks like we made it to the end

I agree, I walk through it most days and am very underwhelmed by it. Especially when you see the size of the ice rink, and then learn that its £6 A GO!!!! and thats only for 40 mins. The big wheel does look nice at night though, from most parts of the town.

Tip for lunch time shoppers, dont walk down the main shopping street in town if you can help it, it adds about 20 minutes to your lunch hour with all those flipping annoying slow Christmas browsers!

The funniest thing about Swansea's "winter wonderland" though is that the Cabinet member for "culture and recreation", Gerald Clement, was quoted this week as saying he'd been down there, and seeing the people ice skating made him think it was like Central Park in New York!!! Jeez, what planet is that man on?????

Anyway, DH took DD back again after school yesterday to go on the big wheel and they really enjoyed it - DD had alot of fun - although it was a misty day so maybe not the best for views.

Y'all whilst I agree that the 'Winter Wonderland' isn't fantastic, it is a huge improvement on what Swansea has had in previous years. That in itself is progress surely.
    :T

People will compare it too Cardiff naturally, but that is after all sponsored by BMI Baby, which is hugely different from Meridian Quay which is the sponsor for Swansea's effort I believe.

Anyway let's not knock our city, enough people do that already

I'm going to lie down now :D

True, it is an improvement, as we haven't had a Winter Wonderland as such before!

What was disappointing that although advertised, the craft market tent that was formerly located outside of the old David Evans store was not there this year. I realise that there was a smaller version down at the Winter Wonderland site, but where were all the other wooden chalets on Castle Gardens as in former years? This was a big mistake, and lost all the ambience that it was reknowned for.

Although more of a turk by heart, now living in Swansea, I wouldn't be anywhere else at the moment. There are a minority of low lifes here, as in any other big town or city, but if we don't lobby against these instead of just talking and complaining, we are the ones who are letting each other down.

Just to be un-pc, I for one am fed up that we are the dumping ground for those that don't make it in their own country. I am not racist, but surely it doesn't take a lot of common sense to realise that a country almost a third the area of France with the same population cannot sustain it's echonomy, health, education etc.

We have complained for years that the NHS waiting lists are too long and that there is high unemployment. If it is true now that 10% of Llanelli's population consists of imigrants from just one Eastern european country, then these problems are being compounded.

I tell you where I see racism - today in Swansea in large groups of ethnic minorities (for not too much longer it seems) gathered in tight groups scattered all around, with not so much as an occident amongst them.

I am not fascist, militant nor NF, but I do see our beloved Wales and it's sense of community and warmth eroding rapidly. I have some personal thoughts of how we could regain some of the "hwyl", but apart from junking soaps and televisions etc, I'm not going there now!

Anyway, having digressed and your still with me, I LOVE SWANSEA! (and Llanelli. And Wales!).

  • I got so fed up with Swansea City Centre, that I prefer to go to LLanelli when I have the time. There is a brilliant new Aldi, park there for free and walk into the City Centre! There's also a very nice big Lidl, which is very quiet.
