Hello folks - back from a trip to A$da. Spent roughly £22 on food. Bought quite a bit of fish as I'm craving it just now - nice oily fish yum. They have small packs of individual lightly smoked salmon (but like a small salmon fillet) wrapped in plastic with butter - you just microwave it as is -£1. Bought one to try it as that would make a quick lunch for me. They have a deal on tinned red salmon, better than half price, so i got 3. Also got 2 packs of salmon fillets, some fish sticks (I know, I know, not much fish!!) and some smoked mackerel which is yellow stickered. It will go straight into the freezer. They had a lot of YS fish but I am always wary, having once been horribly ill after eating salmon in a pub. Took me a while to be able to eat salmon again. I grew up with fresh fish from the pier so I prefer not to get it whoopsied. The smoked should be fine I hope. What else? Their trays of free range eggs (15 I think, medium) are 2 for £3 so that's quite good. Got some almonds and dried apricots to add to my porridge mix in the mornings.
Off to read back through the thread and get some inspiratoon from you wise lot!

scotsaver, have added your fritatta recipe to the front list

losing patience, I can get skirt and mutton from my brilliant village butcher but I remember a few years ago going into a city butcher and asking for skirt of beef and none of the 3 'butchers' in the shop knew what I meant ;)
... don't throw the string away. You always need string! :D

something needs to be addressed in my wife's shopping habits!!--i have just looked at our business's food consumption for the 1st month of the year--1st october to 31st oct--there are 5 of us eating a main meal at lunch time--oodles of coffee and tea and a snack for tea--basically everything 5 people need between 9am and 9pm 6 days a week--i believe they have breakfast that i never see!!--the bill is 120 quid-BUT--in 10 days at home we have spent 138 quid on 2 adults and a daughter who mostly eats with granny---also i am on a diet and just snack after the food at school!--the cook does the shopping at work and uses a mainstream budget supermarket --maybe my wife needs some pointers!!

Good morning all :) another NSD for me. I'm at my parents and slowly cooking my way through the groceries my mum bought on my recommendation for our dinners. Sainsburys are doing a HUGE 3kg chicken (not free range though) for £5. So it would be good if you have a big family or if you really want to do a rubber chicken. Also had other huge packs of meat for the same price so worth taking a look

Going to have a roast tonight and some gravy as it's so cold then not sure about tomorrow- perhaps some spaghetti bolognaise and some garlic bread and then some yoghurt or trifle for desert.

Have a good day all :)

Just updated my signature to the end of yesterday - hadn't updated since spends on 1st - and am more than half way through this months budget already.

Since my last signature update I've spent £31.12 with BBFL (including postage), £1.89 on potatoes and 39p on a lettuce on 3rd

    4th saw a spend on bananas (58p)

6th saw a spend of £1.10 on 11 jars of pasta sauce (staff only sales as slightly OOD) which would have cost me £16.50 at Mr T (they had an offer on them at the time) - so a fantastic saving there, and 44 pasta lunches sorted for me :)

6th also saw a Whoopsie haul of a a Chilli Prawn Linguine (tea that night), a Chicken Caesar Pasta and a Macaroni Cheese (lunch and tea the next day respectively, the macaroni cheese being served with a burger from my Whoopsie haul on 1st and some tomatoes I already had in), a large pot of Organic Apricot yoghurt, a pack of 2 individual tubs of Spotted D!ck & Custard, and a large tub of clotted cream ([strike]£10.05[/strike] £2.70)

So far this month I've only bought 2 full price items, which were the potatoes and the bananas.

Will be spending again after work today - need milk (ran out a few days ago, but have been managing with some OOD UHT stuff which is really past it's best as I've only been using it in my cuppas and don't use much at a time :o) and fancy some red cabbage with the second portion of corned beef hash (had ketchup with it on Monday as I'd no red cabbage in the house). Must do a quick check for anything else I need, as today is an 'extra discount' day at work ;)

  • Just spent £8 in Mr S on: my lunch (don't seem to be able to manage preparing it at home for more than 2-3 days a week!), diet coke, paracetemol, and 800g of extra mature cheese for £5.. no idea if that's a good deal or not really, but we did need some for tonight's tea!

  • Hi all, just off to update my signature. Seem to have spent a high proportion of my budget early in the month again, so will have to have plenty of nsds for a bit.

I have some good stocks now though, had a very low-meat high-veg week last week and ended up craving protein so badly that I spent 95p on some hot chicken nuggets from Morrisons!! :rotfl:

Have stocked up on basics tuna to avoid this happening again, OH made a lovely chilli on Sunday so I was able to bring some home to cover a couple of meals. I just like a little portion with no rice, just a couple of garlic slices to scoop it up. :D

I have some nice beef skirt for the slow cooker tomorrow, will do in a thick gravy with some HM yorkies for DDs. I have ham (one half cooked, one half uncooked) in my freezer that I got from Lidls the other week (£2.99 for the 'joint' and much leaner/bigger than sains basics ham joint) and also have lots of sausages in there (were reduced to pence - will most likely be turned into sausage rolls) so am sorted for meat for a while.

I've had a few extra expenses as it's DD1's birthday this week, but think I should be able to stick to budget overall.

By having stocks of flour, eggs, sugar, stork I've managed to bake every week and haven't needed to buy any processed confectionery/chocolate/biscuits etc. :j

I have made two of the lovely lemon drizzle loaf cakes from the recipe index on page 1, it's the perfect work coffee accompaniment and I'm also going to serve slabs with custard as a pudding tomorrow! :T

As a pure aside, I realise I have now lost a full stone in weight since January, which is purely from a) walking to work every day and b) eating smaller portions of hm food.

I'm not particularly interested in 'diets' or 'slimming' and was only slightly above my suggested weight before, but I feel a lot better for it and it just goes to show, you don't need gyms or fancy 'diet' foods to make a difference - just go OS!!!
  • Managed to get beef skirt but it was more expensive then I thought it would be @£8.80 per kilo! Is this the going rate? Anyways I ended up spending £3.70 on it so these pasties are becoming more expensive!
Going to get to grips with food shopping again, starting February!

Got married to my lovely hubby on 12/11/2011 :D
  • Better late than never?! Sorry to be sooooooooooo late, laptops broken... anyway... declaring £443.75 for October. Going to try for a budget of £450 in November. Thanks to all...
