Hi there, I have also had huge problems with my back. I have a really deep tempur mattress and it made all the difference in the world to me. I bought mine online from a company called "back in action" about ten years ago. I did get VAT relief as well. I have a feeling the type of mattress I have is no longer available. This company specialise in back stuff though and were the cheapest when I was looking. They can give loads of advice. I was lucky enough to be able to borrow the money to get mine.

Hope you manage to solve this. Have you tried looking on e bay?? Just a thought sometimes people buy them and decide they don't like them. I got a tempur car seat and a topper this way.
Enough money to live on so retired early...planning to see where life takes me:D

Ten years ago only Tempur were making memory foam mattresses because they held the patent. Although now many other manufacturers make memory foam mattresses better than them, and for a fraction of the price. So although you love your mattress, I was telling the OP that they can get mattresses with more support for far less money, and they don't have to just go for Tempur because they are the big name in the business.

    Can anyone give pointers?

Lower, well half of it operated on, inserts on 7 discs. As the time of my reply suggests, I cannot sleep.

I have checked the website that I referred to because I was unsure if they still existed. They too have something to say about the new tempur mattresses which people can read for themselves if they are interested. They provide allsorts of matresses and have shops where people can try them out if they are able to visit. The reason I pointed people to this site is because they are back specialists and understand what different people need and so give really good advice, everybody has different needs and so need to be treated on an individual basis. They are however still not cheap, although they were the cheapest when I was looking, which is why I suggested the OP tried e bay. I know what it is like to be in pain night after night. I bought a really cheap topper on e bay first , it was tempur but the seller had never used it, it helped and that is why I then went the whole hog and bought another one new

Again, Many thanks for the suggestions. Im getting assessed by my local 'Rapid asessment unit' next week and have the doctor coming to reinforce this.
There is no Disabled Facility Grant in Hampshire for a bed, but Ive been told that they may be able to supply me with a mattress or even an ortho bed.

    I'll keep you informed.

One weay to try out a memory foam topper por matress is to get it from QVC as you get a month to try it and return no questions and full refund.

I got my first memeory foam topper from them it was brilliant lasted several years then got another.

What I have found even better is to place a cleansed feather matress topper on top of the memeory foam topper ( I know I am pricess and the pea girl!)

I have spine injury arthritus and lost of nerve pain and get better nights sleep with these toppers.

I understand how using a feather topper can help relieve you nerve pain. However by putting it on top of the memory foam topper you are actually stopping the memory foam working properly. Memory foam needs your body heat to soften it, and the feather topper will be insulating it from your body heat, making the memory foam firmer.

I have been told by a physiotherapist in the past that memory foam mattresses can actually make bad backs etc worse. Apparently, they enourage you to lie in one position for much longer than you would normally and can make for more pain and stiffness. Be careful before shelling out ££££s.

It actually depends on the cause of your back problem, and also the design of the mattress.

Tempur mattresses are reflex foam with 3" of 85kg per m3 memory foam on top. This depth of memory foam at such a high density does prevent you from moving about as easily. However the best design for support and easy movement is pocket sprung with 2" of 60 to 70kg per m3 memory foam. This way you won't end up in a mould unable to move, and will have no problem changing position.

It seems that many physios seem to think that Tempur are the only memory foam mattress manufacturers on the market.
