In all honesty, I have had more issues with windows 7 than I ever had with Vista.

All the same, I wouldn't go back to XP. No point trying to cling to old technology. More than likely it'll just compromise your security when windows stop updating it.

Whatever you do though, get a 64 bit OS.
Interesting. was this an upgrade Vista >> Windows 7 .

Well, I left uni, so couldn't move my free student version of vista business to my new PC and decided I might as well update OS with my PC.

The worst thing I find in 7 is that it "forgets" settings changes that I make.

Like asking me every time I play games on high settings if I want to change my colour settings for example, you tell it you never want to see it again, restart the computer, load a game and it asks you again.

I even went into the actual settings for it and turned it off there but it still asks me if I want to change my colour settings. Nothing serious, just annoying, I kinda wish windows would just fix that, getting knocked out of fullscreen every time I open a game is a bit of a pain.

I absolutely love XP - it's a great OS... But the 64-bit version was unusable, not all new software/hardware supports it, and Microsoft are withdrawing support pretty soon.

Vista could be infuriating and felt unfinished... but Windows 7 is pretty slick and impressive. A bit too much bloat and eye-candy for me compared to the sleek look of XP, but it's not too OTT.

It's a bit frustrating the way that certain features have been crippled in different versions of Windows 7, though. Shockingly, you can't join a domain or connect from another PC via Remote Desktop unless you have the Professional, Ultimate or Enterprise versions! (Although there's a simple hack to enable Remote Desktop server.)

There's no point paying extra for a version with "XP Mode" - just set up a multi-boot system or use VirtualBox to create a virtual machine.

My main PC has both XP and 7 - and I still use both (along with Linux, of course), but for the average person there's probably not much need for XP - just go with Windows 7!

I have had to move my scanner over to my old (single core AMD machine, 1.5Gb RAM) machine as the drivers only go up to Vista. Aside from that Windows 7 has been flawless once I stopped bothering to dual boot and it's the only OS on my newest machine of 2008. I just got fed up with all the spyware and hacks aimed at XP in the end, but there's nothing wrong with it as long as you're happy to work on keeping it secure until MS pulls the support plug.

And as for games, Google them to find out what works: Command and Conquer Generals, for example, works if you copy the whole of both CDs to the hard drive before installing in Win7, there are loads of workarounds like that.

I am enjoying reading the answers and opinions on this
and this is obviously the way to go, but when you have
a system that serves you well as xp does it takes some
    thinking about to change it.
I will def go for windows 7 now though and thanks everyone
    again for your response
I aways enjoy reading the technie thread anyway and find
