If it runs on Vista it will run fine on 7. Vista and 7 are closely related (Kernel versions 6 and 6.1) just like how Windows 2000 Pro and XP were much the same underneath (Kernels 5 and 5.1).

I wouldn't think twice. I hate moving to a new OS but absolutely love 7. It makes lots of things quicker and easier and btw Office 2010 is fab too (software4students if you know anyone at all who's styudying, £40 for full version, mega bargain). You'll feel so modern!

I could not believe it to find the 7 HP runs quicker than XP on my old EEE 900 with its slow SSD (which I think W7 is more geared to dealing with). I have finally made full migration onto W7.
Do I want it? ......Do I need it? ......What would happen if I don't buy it??????
  • I can't even look at XP desktop. Are you really asking for XP ? 10 yrs. old OS ?

Yeah XP is very old now. Its all Windows 7 with lot of security in it compared to XP.
  • Win 7 is a bit more effective at prioritizing HDD access, and caches aggressively. That alone usually makes it snappier than XP.
  • Windows 7 is fine, XP is poor.

    Just go with 7.

When my main PC started dying a couple of weeks ago and I put together another in a hurry, I decided to bite the bullet and move from XP to Win 7.

Installation was the most painless from Microsoft yet. All my hardware works and my biggest worry, lots of old legacy software (some are Windows 95 era) I need work perfectly. My good old copy of Office 97 even runs perfectly.

It been rock solid and there are many useful enhancements but its not a million miles away from familiar XP. I must admit I hated the start menu but soon found an application that made it work like XP, yes I know I am a troglodyte ;) It feels a lot more secure too.
