Hang on, there's nothing troglodite about liking XP.... I rue the day when I have to finally bin it off :(
    ......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple :D
  • for me winXP is more suitable, for a new PC I'll recommend you win7

What is everyones opinion on windows 7,
    Mostly good but.….

I have had to ditch a few older pieces of hardware that are not supported and no drivers are available. I am irritated that my Adaptec USB video capture device won’t work with 7. It is old but it did the job. Check your important hardware carefully.

I find Windows7 Explorer a dog compared to WindowsXP Explorer. It is far slower at filling the right hand pane and sometimes crashes for no obvious reason, although it hasn’t done that since the last automatic update.

I use a USB cable modem (yes, I know I should use wireless but I had problems with my wireless modem) and if I accidentally pull out the cable it blue screen crashes the system. I have to use the safely remove hardware tool. With XP it would happily cope with me just unplugging the modem.

Otherwise I am reasonably happy with 7.

Win7 has already got more users worldwide than vesta- both low 20%-ish with xp on 60% -more a sad comment on vesta.
Remember m'soft HAS to sell product.
Newer tech can be better but that's not guaranteed.
  • I have a 64bit Wndows 7 laptop and I love it, it makes things so easy. But I have had to get some different accounting software (thanks to the free MS Money post!!), and it is way too powerful to run some of my old software. Boot up is quick, it runs quickly, things are easy to find, filing is easy. AND I have found no bugs in it!!
What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare

we have xp on the 2 desktops because we run some older hardware and you cant get the drivers .
I have a graphic tablet which will only run on xp 32bit or below for example but it would cost a bomb to buy a new tablet.
The newer machine has 64bit xp as that needs more memory and 32bit will only see just over 3gb.
I have windows 7 on the laptop and it is very smooth running even though there is only 1.8ghz of processor and 2gb memory.
You could always dual boot if you already have xp. Have windows 7 for the main OS and xp as a second option, then any games that wont run in one, will run in the other. Thats what my son has as his set up and he is a very games orientated person.

I think the decision has already been made for you by the PC manufacturers, who have stopped installing XP even before Microsoft's deadline! Even corporate customers won't be able to get it out of Dell.

If you have no ancient hardware or programs, I would agree with the others and go for 64-bit Windows 7.

I think some some of the HP business machines provide the choice of xp or win 7 -- for now ....
  • In all honesty, I have had more issues with windows 7 than I ever had with Vista.

All the same, I wouldn't go back to XP. No point trying to cling to old technology. More than likely it'll just compromise your security when windows stop updating it.

Whatever you do though, get a 64 bit OS.
