It says Medion Recovery Disc: Support for these products is provided by Medion AG and then it has Windows Vista Home Premium. I got it with my laptop. Is this the correct thing i should be using?
    thanks again for responding

Often hard to tell but it should be okay; one of my xp machines has an oem Fujitsu labelled disc but it runs and installs normally as fully-blown xp. Strange why it refuses to read the disc proper.

    1.
Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click System Restore.
    2.
On the Welcome screen, click Restore my computer to an earlier time, and then click Next.
    3.
On the Select a Restore Point page, select the date from the calendar that shows the point you'd like to restore to, and then click Next.

    Any warranty left ?
Have you another pc you could connect h/drive to, then try and run the h/drive maker's diagnostic prog on? This would need a 2.5" h/d caddy plugged into a usb.
CEX sell h/drives -40GB for £15 del. and 12mths g'tee -this is small size but will get you going.
