Growing nails

my nails have been wrecked! I used to have acryllic overlays up until about 2 years ago, and they caused untold damage to my natural nails.
They grow so far, then split & flake or just tear off like a piece of paper.
My mum recommended me 'biotin' from Holland & Barratts. They are tablets which you take 2 a day. I have been for about 4 weeks, and my nails are growing really well - and strong!! And its supposed to be good for your hair too!! I use the 1000 strength ones0 -
Plain old olive oil. Warm it up a bit (be careful especially if using the microwave...) and soak your nails in it for as long as your boredom threshold will allow. Half an hour daily is the ideal, but even 5-10 mins makes a difference. Rub it into your cuticles a bit too while you are soaking them.
My nails are truly cr4p, and when I had the patience to soak them in olive oil for a few minutes each night they were so much stronger, and far less likely to peel. I should really start doing that again!Trust me - I'm NOT a doctor!0 -
OPI Nail Envy all the way - can be used just as a clear varnish, or a top/bottom coat with colour. My beautician swears by it and offered me my money back if it didn't work - it has done and I would recommend it to anyone - my nails have gone from bitten & weak/peeling to long & strong. Yes I still break the odd one, but I'm much happier about my hands & nails now!
I also keep Dove hand cream next to my PC at work to use often and wear gloves when doing housework/washing up/gardening or when it's slightly cold (in the mornings driving to work) all of which helps.

I use the nail cream mentioned on this site:

My nails are VERY soft and peel loads but rubbing this into them several times a day seems to be helping. It's less than a fiver for a pot and it lasts forever! I've decanted some into another pot which I keep on my desk at work.
I also have some OPI nail envy but keep forgetting to use it! Going to get it out now as this thread has reminded me about it!0 -
It isnt an old wives tail - there are plenty of references to this.
"Long-term exposure to moisture or nail polish can cause nails to peel and become brittle" - If they're nails are already weak then last thing they need is to uise something on a daily basis that could make them worse.
Well all I can say is that my nails have been "exposed" to polish for a very long time with no ill effects. I've not left my nails bare for years, not even for a day, and they're long, strong, healthy and gorgeous. I suspect for every reference you can find to nail polish damaging your nails you'll find at least as many contradicting that.
The nail specialist who used to present the Nail Eat/Drink stuff on QVC (can't remember her name) always said you should never leave your nails bare as it leaves them vulnerable to moisture etc and far more likely to break than if they're covered. Seems to work for me.0 -
My girlfriend swears by Solar Oil for nails and has fantastic shaped nails, even though she sews for a living and does a lot of work by hand.0

Hi everyone:) Thanks for the new replies, I seem to be having a rubbish nail weekend, I took off my nail varnish on friday night and have been rubbing in the Body Shop Nail Rescue Serum and now my nails are flaking even more:( but oddly its just the two middle nails especially the one on my right hand, other nails are looking good, I painted them this morning and at least two of them chipped within half an hour, oh and I keep scratching myself without realising:rotfl:however, I'm going to stick with the hand cream (Sally Hansen) and my cube of jelly a day but I think I'm going to try the nail envy for peeling nails next week - thanks again everyone:)Thank you for this site MartinThe time for change has comeGood luck for the future0

I've bitten my nails for years, *hangs head in shame*
I did have hypnotherapy a few years ago and I stopped biting for about 12 months but then gradually slipped back into my old ways.
For some unknown reason, I've stopped again a few weeks ago.
My nails were very short and I found that as they started to grow, they curled up at the tips.
I've been using Nailtiques 2 and it does seem to stop the curling, I also find that if they are in water for a while, then the curling does start as they dry out. So, I try and wear rubber gloves when washing up etc.
For some strange reason, the tips are really white and it looks as though I've had a french manicure done.
I do think that just using hardener can cause problems and that it is beneficial to also use a product for dry/brittle nails as well as one for weak/peeling nails.Official DFW Nerd Club - Member no: 203.0 -

I still use the Nail eat/drink............it was Carolyn Sears from Supernails...........used to be the thing on QVC. She was always on there.......with another blonde woman I can't remember the name of.
God, how sad is this.........I think I can still remember the order number from about 1996  210 098???????????
If I don't wear polish clear or coloured, my nails are terrible - as soon as I wear polish they grow long and strong.Nicotine Free since 01.08.2010 :j:j:j
