Growing nails

I found a product called Nail Eat was great in helping to strengthen my nails. They also do Nail Drink, which I imagine is more suited to very dry, brittle nails.
Protein is, apparently, essential in helping your nails to grow strong.
I try to take a cue from the natural shape of the cuticle area and file my nails to a 'squoval' I love the look of the very oval nails, but I think they'd look a bit odd on me.From Starrystarrynight to Starrystarrynight1 and now I'm back...don't have a clue how!0 -
I wouldnt put nail varnish on your weak nails as it can sometimes actually damage your nails.
Nah, nail varnish doesn't damage your nails. That's on old wives tale. Taking nail varnish off with harsh nail varnish remover might weaken them, but the nail varnish itself doesn't. On the contrary, if you find the right product it can drastically improve them. Bare nails are more likely to be damaged than covered nails.
Rather than a hardener or strengthener, I'd recommend a product designed especially for soft/peeling nails. E.g. OPI Nail Envy for soft & peeling nails or Nailtiques Formula 2 (my personal fave). When your nails do grow you'll need a decent nail file, as others have mentioned. Crystal nail files reduce splitting, peeling etc.
Good luck x0 -
How spooky is that? 2 starrystarrys!? Both at 5.51! And I used to love the nail eat/drink products as well (hard to find now).0

Thanks again everyone, I know so little about nails:o
Bronnie, I'll give it a good go, I've had rubbish nails all my life as well, I'll report back:)
Starrystarrynight, I never thought of that about the shape of my cuticles as a guide:othats a really good idea, I have tiny tiny nails with an oval base so I'll go with that to start with it, I have a low carb diet most of the time so protein doesn't seem to be helping much:D
starrystarry, thats exactly what my nails are, soft and peeling, I have heard of Nail Envy and use OPI nail varnish, its easily my favourite brand but hard to get hold of where I live, I wonder where I would get Nailtiques from? I think I'll have a hunt around online:)Thank you for this site MartinThe time for change has comeGood luck for the future0 -
I've never seen Nailtiques in a shop, always bought it online. It's always available on eBay. lookfantastic.com have it as well, and nailrecovery.co.uk.0

The only thing that I've ever found that helps is using cuticle oil to keep the nails moisturised, and using plenty of hand cream and massaging/rubbing in well. I can only say on the nail varnish issue that from personal experience it does dry out my nails, the only exception being when I had a Jessica manicure. But couldn't afford that too often0

My nails have always been weak & flaky. Over the last month or so my hands were becoming noticably dry so I've been using plenty of hand cream each day. I've noticed that my nails have become so much stronger and have grown so much (without flaking!)
I can only presume that it's because of the handcream that my nails have improved so much! I've only been using Dove so it's not been expensive either! :j

This is my experience too. I keep a small bottle of cuticle oil on my desk at work and apply it whenever I remember. Love Me oil by Ciate is my current favourite- it smells wonderful but I'll use whatever I have around if necessary.0 -
JUst to say....
Hand cream has to be the most under-rated way of helping to grow your nails. And when you think about it, it nurtures the cuticles so it makes sense. If you havent got any hand cream any body cream will do.
I've found, to my shock, that some Sally Hansen products make my nails brittle. Its the diamond shine and mega shine. They both seemed to dry the nail out. So I'm now giving them an expensive miss. Of course everyones are different but not good for me.
I bought a nail file from a local beauty supply shop - so I think using the traditional metal ones or even emery boards are not that friendly (again for me).Declutter 300 things in December challenge, 9/300. Clear the living room. Re-organize storage

Is it an actual nail file?, I was wondering because my nails flake or break even when I dont file them, I use an emery board, is that bad? As they have been so short for so long I havnt filed in ages until yesterday but still have the same problem, I think a trip to Boots is in order, lots of good suggestions:) I love jelly cubes;)0
