Growing nails

I have decided to grow my nails, they are very very short atm, not bitten just cut short, they grow quickly but they are quite weak and peel and split, I dont want them really long just medium length, does anyone have a recommendation for a product to help strength and/or growing? I always wear nail varnish but what kind of shape is in fashion atm? I saw someone with very oval nails, almost pointed, and they made her hands look very long and elegant but I'm not sure what to aim for.
Thanks in advance, any tips and advice would be most welcome:)

I use Sally Hansen 'Hard As Nails' which is really good at strengthening nails, its definitely the best one I've used anyway. You can buy it in Boots and supermarkets. Sally Hansen also do a 'Nailgrowth Miracle' which I haven't tried but on their website says it gives you 30% longer nails in 5 days.
As for shape it's up to you. The standard shape at the moment seems to be short to medium, with a squared tip and slightly rounded corners.DFW by end of June 2016...! LBM June 2011

I'd recommend getting some hand cream. I wouldnt put nail varnish on your weak nails as it can sometimes actually damage your nails. Your diet might be a factor too - Eat lots of food containing zinc
(see http://www.nail-care-tips.com/nail-care.php )
The other thing about the shape of your nails. If you have a square edge, or a pointed edge, you are more likely to catch and break your nail. I'd go for a rounded tip until you get used to your nails.

i bought a nail varnish from 'The Nail Doctor' (got it in Boots) and it's called Liquid Bandage. My nails are the same as yours, but if i paint the nails then they flake very easily too. I use this as a base coat, put 2 coats of any nail varnish on and then finish with the liquid bandage as a top coat too and my nails are a lovely length, manageable, and haven't broken, chipped or flaked yet! I think this is my new miracle cure!!
Also, I think that can be a little pricy - I got mine on clearance shelf - but my student sister discovered a nail hardener by Patons in Poundland and that works very well for her too - I've used it before, it doesn't dry as a varnish but almost like an oil on the nail so seeps in and it does strengthen the nail too.

My wife has used numerous nail products to stop breaking and splitting, none worked. She recently bought LEIGHTON DENNY crystal nail file and she hasn't looked back since. It's not the products you use it's how you file them, she swears by this nail file and has told all her friends.0

my sister always used to eat a cube of raw jelly each day, you know the stuff you would add hot water to to make jelly.
i think gelatine helps your nails grow (although i have apsolutely no proof to back this up) , but its cheap and cheerful, maybe woth a go0 -

This is what I was going to post. Seriously look at buying one if you can afford it. Got mine in Boots with points. Have spent a fortune on nail products to stop splitting.
Is it an actual nail file?, I was wondering because my nails flake or break even when I dont file them, I use an emery board, is that bad? As they have been so short for so long I havnt filed in ages until yesterday but still have the same problem, I think a trip to Boots is in order, lots of good suggestions:) I love jelly cubes;)Thank you for this site MartinThe time for change has comeGood luck for the future0 -
It's weird isn't it, because I've NEVER been able to grow my fingernails to look half decent either. That's NEVER ever in my life.
They've always split and been really weak, even though I've always been healthy, eaten well and had good strong hair, bones and teeth! They are also all different shapes, like my thumb nail is really square at the base, my index finger and middle finger nails are rounder and my ring fingernail and pinky are ovals. Also most irritatingly, my toenails have always grown nice and evenly and strong. Why???
My hands are fairly hard-working now, but even when I was younger and more idle, my nails have been the same! I've more or less given up on them now. I trim them really short and file them smooth and that's it. When it matters, I wear fakes!
I wonder if miracles can happen glowgirl?0 -
