Growing nails

I've found, to my shock, that some Sally Hansen products make my nails brittle. Its the diamond shine and mega shine. They both seemed to dry the nail out. So I'm now giving them an expensive miss. Of course everyones are different but not good for me.
snap mineallmine, I also find that the treatments designed to supposedly strengthen my nails make them much worse. They're far better off bare and moisturised than with that type of stuff on them.0 -
Thanks everyone:) I haven't bought anything yet so can anyone recommend a hand cream that has worked for them?, I'm concentrating on the nails as my hands are in good condition. Also now my nails are slightly longer I have noticed my nail varnish chipping really easily, especially at the tips:( obvious really but does anyone have a tip to help this?Thank you for this site MartinThe time for change has comeGood luck for the future0

I had a really nice cuticle oil and now can't remember the name of it! but I often just use vaseline since I always have a little tub of it for my lips. If you're looking for a low cost cuticle treatment, try this0

It's expensive (I got it as a present) but I thought it really did work. In fact I might just treat myself to another one.0 -

It isnt an old wives tail - there are plenty of references to this.
"Long-term exposure to moisture or nail polish can cause nails to peel and become brittle" - If they're nails are already weak then last thing they need is to uise something on a daily basis that could make them worse. (above was taken from http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/003247.htm)
My friend is a technician at centre parcs - She said that you shouldnt leave nail polish on for days on end and neither should you keep using remover. She often lets her nails bare to give them a break from the toxins that are in some polishes. Thanks everyone:) I haven't bought anything yet so can anyone recommend a hand cream that has worked for them?, I'm concentrating on the nails as my hands are in good condition. Any hand cream really - I like using clarins cream - not cheap but shop around and it lasts ages: http://www.boots.com/en/Clarins-Hand-and-Nail-Treatment-Cream-100ml_7336/?CAWELAID=334481317&cm_mmc=Shopping%20Engines-_-Google%20Base-_---_-Clarins%20Hand%20and%20Nail%20Treatment%20Cream%20100ml
If you must wear nail polish make sure you use a base coat, a colour coat and a top coat, Should stop it chipping (or buy better polish)
as for a nail file i use a leighton denny crystal one: http://www.boots.com/en/Leighton-Denny-small-crystal-nail-file_924162/?CAWELAID=334516637&cm_mmc=Shopping%20Engines-_-Google%20Base-_---_-Leighton%20Denny%20small%20crystal%20nail%20file Will never use an emery board again!

The Aveeno hand cream, from Boots, is nice.
Elemis do a mega expensive one - Pro collagen but that's about thirty quid - I know! It came as part of an offer. But it is lovely.
Nivea Q10 is good too.
But start with anything you have.Declutter 300 things in December challenge, 9/300. Clear the living room. Re-organize storage

Had a hunt around last night and found various half used hand creams so will work through those first, I also found a crystal nail file (dd had this in a little kit she got for christmas last year) its not the brand recommended here but I'll start with it, I also found a Sally Hanson base and top coat and a nail oil from the Body Shop, I've had this for a long time, it seems ok so I used a bit last night, I hope I can do this, my nails are still short but longer than I'm used to and it feels very strange:o I'm going shopping today so will see what else I come across and I plan to buy some zinc and some jelly cubes:DThank you for this site MartinThe time for change has comeGood luck for the future0

I've definitely heard the jelly cubes thing before, can't remember who it was that ate them, but I guess there must be something in it..
Mine are fairly ruined from all the nail polish, and the fact I never get enough calcium..they flake and break before they get to be a decent length.0 -
I have found nail envy from opi to be brilliant - boots sell it but it only costs a couple of punds more for 2 bottles (bogof) from qvc. it really does what it says on the bottle! oh and rubber gloves and handcream too0
