Read the instuctions which come on the SD card or download from the HTC site, it has all the million icons it uses (bar downloaded apps)
I have just got mine and first thing I did was switch off the data connection because I not have a data plan just yet. I am useing the wifi. Want to see what my daily usage with wifi is before I go bankrupt
Anyone recommend any apps for the desire? Also whats the difference with a widget and an app when adding them to the screen? Some don't seem to be any different.

As to Apps to recommend, it depends what you like/want/use.
A few I like are:-
World Newspapers - exactly what is says.
Angry Birds an infuriatingly addictive game.
Handcent - SMS application
Laputa - book reader0 -
It is a real shame that airtime providers (generally) have caps on data as it limits the full potential of these phones.
Thank goodness for free wi-fi
Yes, I believe this comes about from networks falling over themselves to attract new customers, not anticipating the success of 'Smartphones' and failing to adequately upgrade their networks to handle large volumes of data.
The result? Severely restricted data tariffs and large out of allowance fees.0 -
I've had a Desire on T-mobile since March. The most I've ever used is 750mb which includes some youtube and lots of internet browsing. 3gb should be more than enough. Don't forget to set the phone up to pick up your home wi-fi so you're not needlessly using any data allowance.0

You can do it that way.
I also use the wefi app which automatically connects to free wi-fi (including my home wi-fi)0
