Challenge: Raising £500 for Christmas before 1st December

:xmastree:

I have set myself a challenge to raise £500 for Christmas by the 1st December 2010!

There is a catch however - and that is the money that I raise cannot come from my salary, a credit card, loan or my savings. It is literally a beg/borrow/steal situation (obviously not steal!).

In poor economic times when even Her Majesty is cutting back on her Christmas party, I think we should make the appropriate steps to make a spectacular, debt free Christmas!

Anyone is welcome to join my on my quest, and the rules are that vouchers, freebies can be included within the £500!

Before you say the obvious, I have read the guru's
:money: article and I've already taken note - but this is what I consider a far more ambitious challenge!

I would welcome anyone's ideas, tips, hints and anyone who would be interested in joining me in my Christmas challenge! :D

  • That sounds like a really hard challenge - 40 days and £500 which means you need to average £12.50 per day.

Don't think it's one I'll be trying myself at the moment, but very good luck to you, will be fascinating to see how you go with it!

ideas... selling stuff you no longer need on ebay/carboots/facebook etc.?
  • Wow - good luck & keep us posted! A fun challenge. I wouldn't mind finding an extra £500!!

If you have an iphone apparently you can get over £100 if you upgrade and hand in your old phone... I keep meaning to do that.

Did you hear about the guy who traded up from a paperclip to a house?

    Hi Soupersaver and thanks moneydad!

Unfortunately I have a Nokia - I believe in robustness and it has served me well! Sounds interesting - I haven't heard about the guy who traded up from a paperclip?

Nevertheless, I've made my first few steps in my challenge today! Firstly, I've sold my old, broken mobile for £40 (yes - they really did offer £40 for a cracked screen Nokia!).

Secondly, I've just signed up as a mystery shopper! I have an assignment this weekend which will pay £10, so it's a good but steady start!! :D

So hopefully, £50+ by the end of the week!

There's a book of it - it's called 'One Red Paperclip'. Makes very interesting reading, I'd love to be able to do something like that, but I don't think many people would help you over here in the UK do you?

Have you thought about a car boot sale? this is a quick way to raise money from items you dont need. Dont be sentimental. You are sure to have items you dont need.
MSE is a religion and the Arms is its Temple:money:

  • Or a garage/yard sale perhaps?

Hi Atlantis, it was at aba-i.co.uk.

Just Googled 'one red paperclip' and oh my gosh!! Is that for real?! But you're right moneydad - we're too stingy in the UK!

Just a quick update, today I've made £20 in shopping vouchers by signing up as consumer panellist. This means that everytime I go shopping for certain things, I have to go and report what I've bought.

So that's so far £70 this week!!

I do have one question - women have Ann Summer and Avon parties... Does anyone know of any similar things that us men can do??? Perhaps selling remote control cars? :rotfl:

Great suggestion, however my father used to be the king of hoarders and thankfully I haven't inherited his actions, so there isn't actually anything I don't need!!
