  • Whats the worst that can happen ?? lol

I'll give it a go tomorrow, once all backed up. Thanks

So it will restore it with all the applications still intact as when it left the factory?

I wonder what the success rate of this working is?

The worst is a computer with a non-working OS, serious but not fatal as reinstalling the OS will solve it but I doubt this will happen at all :)

Yes, it should be as you first turned it on when you got it.

Very high, the restore option is made to be fairly simple so those without much computer knowledge can do it.

It really is easier than it seems :)

EDIT - If in doubt give Dell a ring (not sure of the call costs though  )
  • JUst an Idea I had, but go to control panel / system / system protection
Then see if your external disk has protection on , if so configure to be off it may be causing the problem. If that does not cure it then you can always switch it back on.

  • All seems to be off, so I don't think it's that.

    Thanks for the suggestion anyway.

Hmmm that looks very interesting..seems to be exactly the same problem as I am having, will give it a go tomorrow before I try the PC restore.

    Thanks and night.

So these are the instructions I'm to follow (below the image), however I can't find the "Safe mode with networking option", is that just "Safe Mode"?.

    safe-mode-windows-7-2.jpg

    1) Start the computer and press f8 on boot up and select'Safe Mode without networking'.
    2) In the start menu type 'cmd' (without quotes) andon the top search result right click the program and choose 'run as administrator'
    3) Type "net stop winmgmt" without quotes and press enter to make certain the WindowsManagementInstrumentation (WMI) service is not running.
    4) In the start menu click 'computer' on the right hand side. Go to the windows\system32\WBEM\ folder and rename the Repository folder to something else like OLDRepository (right click and choose 'Rename Folder'.
    5) Reboot and restart as normal.
    6) In the start menu type 'cmd' (without quotes) and at the top right click the program and choose 'run as administrator'
    7) Type 'net stop winmgmt' (without quotes) and press enter to stop the wmi service.
    8) Type 'winmgmt /resetRepository' (without quotes)and restart the system.
  • I assume you mean Safe Mode (without networking) and yes "Safe Mode" is without connections enabled as opposed "safe mode with networking" which allows networking.

Yes, sorry I did mean safe mode without networking. I'm hopeful it might work as it appears to be exactly the same problem as I have.
