Please can anyone help?

I backup to an external hard drive once a week.

Windows 7 is reporting that it is failing due to VSS errors?

Checked the event log and it's showing over 45,000 errors and warnings, is this normal?.

I've removed te McAfee virus protection as I thought that may be why I was having trouble with the backup - but no luck.

Can anyone help before I make my computer unusable?

Also removed spybot as that was responsible for many errors.

Could it be Ccleaner that has caused the problems?

Its a Dell XPS7100 - only had it since May.

Now getting user profile errors, help!

    Thanks Browntoa, I've tried starting the thing up as it suggested by still the backup doesn't work (its the backup built into windows7).

    I got this message:

    A VSS writer has rejected an event with error 0x800423f3, The writer experienced a transient error. If the backup process is retried,
    the error may not reoccur.
    . Changes that the writer made to the writer components while handling the event will not be available to the requester. Check the event log for related events from the application hosting the VSS writer.

    Operation:
    Freeze Event

    Context:
    Execution Context: Writer
    Writer Class Id: {a6ad56c2-b509-4e6c-bb19-49d8f43532f0}
    Writer Name: WMI Writer
    Writer Instance ID: {13d8c3de-57d9-4b93-ab25-cc8ddf2b9d86}
    Command Line: C:\Windows\system32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs
    Process ID: 3380

    It suggests editing the registry but I am not confident on doing that without someone confirming it's OK.
  • Would doing a system restore back to last Sunday (when the backup worked) fix it?, or would it make it worse?.

    Check the external drive with CHKDSK - there may be a problem with the drive thats causing it to hang so windows can't write to it. And no, 45000 error messages isn't normal :D

    Windows 7 won't let me run a Check Disk, I get errors on the event viewer went I try to run it. Can it be set to run any other way ?

    I'd also try using a freeware backup program; not that built into Windows .

    ^absolutely (almost!) not.

    certainly McAfee could be causing potential problems (I don't use the wretched thing myself!) but u say u have disabled.??
