  • My problem is that I can't access ANY programmes at all, apart from Firefox & Outlook Express.

When I click on any other icon, or if I click 'start' and try to access any program from there, my screen freezes & I have to re-boot.

Doh, sorry. Can you get into safe mode as described in earlier post?

Have you tried repairing IE? Might be worth a go.
It's (thankfully) ages since I've used ME, but I think it's control panel/add remove programs/windows internet explorer v?........ there should be a repair option if I remember correctly.

    Hi, have started in safe mode, managed to access the above, but unsure which one, the choice is;
    Internet Explorer Q891781
    Windows ME Edition KB891711 update
    Windows ME Edition Q823559 update

Once I click on one of them, won't this remove the program?
  • Have located Microsoft Internet Explorer, have clicked on remove & I was given the option to repair, but when I tried to do this, it wouldn't allow me, I have added componants? Restarted, but still same problem?

If you can get online with Firefox then it's not hardware related. IE is trying to do something which is hanging the PC.

Check it's not trying to access the modem rather than the router.

Control Panel, Internet Options, connections. Select "never dial a connection".
  • Hi all, after several weeks of trying to sort this problem out, I have finally accepted that I need to reinstall windows.

Lots of other problems, cd rom not working, icons not responding etc. After looking at & making enquires on other forums have been advised to re-intall.

I have now inserted the red floppy & am waiting for my PC to re-load. Am feeling really apprehensive about all this as not technically minded.

Will no doubt have to post back later today with further queries.

    Thank you

  • Thanks Browntoa

Windows has now reinstalled & I have my first problem!

I currently run a Linksys router through the problem PC which allows my laptop wireless access

My PC is unable to accept the ethernet cable that I currently have installed via modem/router/usb connector into PC(My PC doesn't have an ethernet port)

I have tried to re-install the set up disc which came with the usb/ethernet cable but I get an error message 'Please insert a disk into drive Q' The disk is in the CD rom and making lots of noice but not installing

    Any help anyone?

my computer> right click on the cd drive and select open, then look for a file named setup.exe (or something along the lines if that)
  • Have tried this, & message appears stating 'Please insert a disk into drive Q' The disk IS in?

I have also tried to re-install the software for my printer, the CD starts installing but can't complete?
