op's choice at the end of the day.
He can't spend what he hasn't got.
Do it once, or do it twice.
How does expending a few hundred quid equate to "doing it twice" when "doing it once" will be of the order of ten times the dosh?

And nowhere can I see mentioned any desire by the OP to replace a conventional boiler with a combi.

New combi system and the associated tank removal and replumbing would probably start around £2,500 upwards, price depends on so many factors. Rather more than fitting a 3 port valve...
There's nothing in any of your posts that indicate that a new boiler is required.

Post number 55 as well and I suspect that you would not want a combi seeing as how much HW you and your family seem to require.

what do you mean by that? I've never mentioned how much water we require! lol!

We don't have £2.5k, we have just moved into our new home with all our money tied up for the next few months.

The heating system was installed in '99 - the previous occupants have managed with it,our whole street has the same set up, so why do i need to replace the whole lot?

What seems to be working so far is, heating is kept permanently ON and the bottom switch of the immersion heater is switched on at aprox 7pm and off at 7am.

This keeps the house at a constant temperature and we have hot water for washing up and baths etc.

What i will do this weekend, is take off the immersion heater thermostat covers and see what they are set too - i'll post back the results.

Errm - yes you did - sort of.
we are a family of 4 (2 adults and 2 young children) - unfortunately we are not chavs and require hot water.

    seems pretty clear to me

Yes I know that which is why I am questioning why others are pushing a complete system replace at you as there is no reason for it at present.

You don't. It is not me saying that you do. I'm arguing the opposite.

    Excellent.
