  • If the DSR laws allow people to cause companies additional costs, then they're another stupid law stifling UK business.

I would have thought that 7 days cooling off period would be from date of sale.

    :)

Wish I'd seen your post before contacting them as sounds like a perfect solution! It's an HP btw.

Sorry, only thought of it last night ;)

now I am too scared to as they will deem it as further 'use' and use it against me. I'm not sure how to do it anyhow

This was a HP too. Have a look round your Start menu menu in Accessories, or an HP folder. There should be something about recovery disks (it'll be HP specific rather than a Windows program). Unfortunately it's been replace with a different make so can't look it up, but try looking here on HPs site.

IIUC it should make a copy of the original system files that are stored on another part of the hard disk, so it's not too late to do it now. You'll at least be able to tell them its back in its factory state. They should only care about it being resaleable at full value, which then it should be (apart from the box seal being broken but that's back to the DSR right to open the box).

Have you got anyone technical who can help you? (I should also point out that you do this at your own risk and can't sue me if it goes wrong ;))

Or just recognition that now there's a lot more distance selling through Internet and mail-order that consumers are denied the opportunity to examine goods as they can in a shop? It's just a business risk of selling online and will be accounted for when they set their prices and plan their expenses.

Nope, from point of receipt, unless they don't tell you about your rights under the DSR, then it's 28 or 30 days IIRC.

Stugib, I'll unpack the thing again and have a look. No-one techie around here at all. How long should it take? I've told them I will do it with their software team's support and it will then be 'as arrived'.

Curious how some people on a MSE website support traders who choose to sell goods online while ignoring the law in the service of profit eh. Stuff the consumer and his statutory rights....not exactly a tiny one-man outfit retailer either. What's £699 to a company taking out full pagers in the daily newspapers?!

That is their attitude entirely. The main aim of a corporation is to maximise its profits. complaints and the law get in the way of that, and they know damned well that they can get away with murder on a cost benefit analysis comparison of following the law or ignoring it. Ignoring it usually brings more profits.

  • Its hardly hard for them to reset the laptop. I reset my computer systems every 6 months to clean all the crap off them. It only talks max of 30 minutes. So JLD is trying to get you to back down.

I am dyslexic so if there is any spelling or grammer mistakes I am sorry.

Agreed. Also, I wouldn't apologise for spelling or grammar mistakes - all the posts of yours I've looked at contain less mitsakes then mine! Dyslexia is not something to apologise for,.

I just saw this post and by what some of you are saying you would think all JL bosses do is twiddle waxed moustaches plotting how to rip people off.

I liked the link johnlewisexposed, too many crack pots out there with too much time on their hands. Yes it is a shop, it is staffed by humans and they make mistakes sometimes and have bad days. Cut shop assistanst some slack!!!!!

I have worked for JL in the past and you have no idea how demanding, rude, lying and stupid some customers can be!

Also when taking the laptop back take it in store it is easier than returning via the website. (unless they have changed the rules since I left)

I never worked in computers but if you have a problem with noise then I would ask the assistant if it was possible to have a demo model setup in a quiet room. Often some stores have a room set aside for TVs so you can hear what the sound quality is like. If not I am sure there is a room somewhere that they could do that for you. You will be suprised how far some assistants will go to please customers, just ask!

As for the call centre well AFAIK it is a central thing which is not directly owned by JL so customer service can be a bit low sometimes.

It really does annoy me when I see people complain about staff in shops. I feel most of the people that complain about them have never had to work in a shop and have no idea how hard it can be. Just remember they are often on low wages and they have to work everyday off the week usually with rotating days off just to server all the hordes of people that need to shop late nights, untill 6 or 8pm on sats and sundays. You should really be nicer to these people!!
