The only alternative is removing a free health service.

Or all of you take a pay cut and give up the nice perks which your public sector job entitles you to, which the rest of us in the private sector have to pay for.

(and before you say it, my wife works for the Belfast Trust, so I hear every day how bad things are).

Aside from flexible working I cant think of too many perks - the pensions are going - good compensation for redundancy is going (Though admittedly it will still be better than most private sector employees that I know of).

The comparitor for my position shows that I get more or less the same as someone in the private sector on base wage. Though there are few jobs in the private sector that are comparable.

I dont see the need to apologise for having a job - which seems to be what those in the private sector are hoping for - that and seeing every public sector employee killed so that they can !!!! on our graves.

I'm not a public sector basher (I used to work there myself, didn't like it much - can't see why private sector employees think public sector have it so easy, my private sector job is a much nicer place to work, with more perks too) but I can't get my head round why they are still having their annual general graduate recruitment round if they are also talking about job losses.

And if you click on the link it takes you to the UK wide civil service recruitment website, and they also seem to be recruiting. Why? Makes no sense to me.

Your wife must work in a very different department to me then - the only perk we had was the Bic biros and they're being taken away too.
Life in this world is, as it were, a sojourn in a cave. What can we know of reality? For all we can see of the true nature of existence is, shall we say, no more than bewildering and amusing shadows cast upon the inner wall of the cave by the unseen blinding light of absolute truth, from which we may or may not deduce some glimmer of veracity, and we as troglodyte seekers of wisdom can only lift our voices to the unseen and say humbly "Go on, do deformed rabbit again.....it's my favourite". © Terry Pratchett in "Small Gods"

I hate that program. Fair play to them who get through but no offense to the people they are usually straight from Uni have no work experience and have no "people" or management skills at all. They also call of as arrogant. It only works (sort off) if they are placed in the right area. I have seen and heard about some horror stories regarding this. One individual messed up a whole office of nearly 100 workers in it. Not there fault as they were put in charge of something they weren't ready for. This program before now also stops promotion with the service (which may be good in some cases!).

A few years ago the boot was on the other foot:o Private sector pay was one and a half times that of their public sector equivalent, I know, I could of jumped ship for a 50% pay rise, but you will find a lot (not all) of the public sector staff are in their jobs because they feel they are helping others and doing a worthwhile job:o

We have a pay freeze in the NHS for the next few years, we have been well and truely shafted by Agenda for Change and RPA, we will have to contribute more now for our so called comfy pensions and we work every day with an axe over our heads.

Take my advice, open your ears and listen more to your wife, I feel sorry for the poor wee lady as it is:o

Robothell "Bic Biros" ha sheer luxury we still have chalk and slate, I'm typing this on my Sincair ZX81 on dial-up;)

The Department of Health in NI employs 920 staff in agencies or arms length bodies on wages of over £100,000.
The figures were revealed in answer to a question from DUP MLA Jonathan Craig to the Department of Finance and Personnel (DFP).
He asked how many staff employed by agencies attached to each Stormont department earn wages over £50,000.
Finance minister Sammy Wilson revealed 3,430 staff earn £50,000-£100,000 and 967 earn in excess of £100,000.
Mr Wilson also revealed the department of health has the biggest wage bill employing 2492 people on salaries of £50,000-£100,000.
Arms length bodies are organisations such as health trusts or education and library boards which operate with varying degrees of independence from goverment.
In its response DFP confirmed that Mr Craig's question was one of a number requesting information on salaries paid to department's arms length bodies.
The department of justice, which was established in April 2010 has the second highest wage bill after the department of health.
It employs 288 staff in agencies within the £50,000 to £100,000 bracket whilst 11 are earning more than £100,000.
The department of education employs 253 staff paid between £50,000 and £100,000 and two on £100,000 plus.
The response from DFP acknowledged that the interest in public sector salaries was likely to continue while the Executive considers the impact of the reduction in funding.

what perks would they be, the long unsocial hours for rubbish pay, working christmas and every other bank holiday, working past ur time and not getting paid for it, being short staffed and not having the time to provide your patients with the care they deserve, taking abuse from patients and relatives
i could list a million more but dont want to go on:mad:

I have to admit that I have never before heard of anyone being in the public sector because they wanted to help society.... maybe it is true but I cannot help but be a touch cynical...
    Always overestimating...
