Not that I have much time for Nipsa but is now the time for joining a union?

yes because the council will cut 'shared services' instead of getting rid of incompetant staff and those most in need will suffer - and no I would not be joining a union but I would go to one of their protests to support them.0

I wouldn't say worried per say, but joining a NIPSA won't help. The cuts have to made, if I'm one of the ones to go then I'll accept it and move on, it won't be easy but I'll suck it up and get on with it.
I'd rather take a pay cut, go back to my pre civil service back pay salary and keep my job, but if NIPSA are involved it'll be a mess IMO

Wouldnt worry unduly. There is nothing you can do about cuts.
I wouldn't join NIPSA as Cathy says if they are involved it will be a mess.0 -
YES very worried - the cuts will come and anyone in Councils, Civil Service or Health should be worried. The cuts will unfortunately come in the wrong places again, Senior and Middle management will look after themselves as they are usually the ones that have to make the rationale for the cuts and they are hardly likely to recommend their own jobs go:o
Most of the cuts should be made by natural wastage, early retirements and recruitment freeze, but I can forsee compulsory redundancies too:o
As for NIPSA:o Save yourself £11 a month, they are as useful as an ashtray on a motorbike:o and YES I am a fully paid up member:oI am trying, honest;) very trying according to my dear OH:rotfl:0 -
Regarding the cuts, everything is "safe" until the new year if there is no pay rise. Come next year its meant to get bad and some departments are worse than others.0

Something else that might free up extra posts is the Civil Service management proposal to allow staff over 55 to retire early without their lump sum and pension being reduced by 5% per year for every year you go before age 60.
As no pay rise (freeze) for 2 years this might prove attractive.0 -
Nipsa lol, was a member years ago. As a poster above says save your money they arent worth the air they breathe0

I don't see why being a NIPSA member would make much of a difference TBH. If the cuts are coming unions aren't going to be able to stand in the way. And yes, I think everyone in the public sector is s***ing themselves. Or certainly in my part of it.
Anyone know how big the public sector is in NI out of interest?? As in how many people? I can't find any figures...0 -
Too late for me to be worried, I'm already redundant!! Don't see how the private sector can pick up the slack as I worked in the private sector on a public sector contract. When the freeze on recruitment was announced earlier this year, I, along with others was out of a job. I think the figure I heard quoted was in the region of 20,000 here in NI in the public sector alone but what about the knock-on effect in the private sector? I really feel for anyone losing their job, in both sectors.0

Sorry to hear that, a lot of private sector companies depend on public service contracts and it will have a knock on effect. At least 10% of our workforce is expected to go, it's scary times for everyone. According to Sammy Wilson there is no point protesting.0
