DLA - Decision on its way!

I applied for DLA about 8 weeks ago (after having put it off for 3 months...) and I called them on Tuesday to see if there was any progress and they said they received the form from my GP dated 12th October and they wrote up the decision letter on the 15th October. This letter then gets posted from a central office second class and takes about a week to get here.

I'm so impatient!! I don't know what this means (never applied before) is it a good sign that they received the GP's report and made a decision straight away or a bad one???

Anyone have any words of wisdom (except the ones about patience being a virtue:p)?

  • Please forgive me for being pessimistic, but everyone I have heard of applying for DLA recently has been turned down without a medical.

When my application was turned down, I was in bits when I got the letter, so the only reason I am replying to you is to prepare you for possible bad news. I really do hope that this is not necessary advice and that you do get an award though.

I am in the process of Appealing and, luckily, have a very supportive GP and Consultants who all expressed disbelief that I was turned down.

After picking myself up again from being turned down, I realised that applying for DLA is actually just a paper exercise; you just have to give them paper evidence that allows them to tick their boxes. I am now viewing it as a game to try to stop myself taking their refusal so personally.

As I say, I really do hope that you are successful first time, but it seems to be very unusual for this to happen currently.

All the best of luck to you.

    Thanks for replying :)

While expecting to be another that is unsuccessful the first time I'm trying to remain positive that it will be a good outcome....which is proving rather difficult!!

It's the not knowing thats getting me!

  • Totally agree with that! I'm fine when I have the work to gather the evidence etc, but sitting drumming my fingers when it's in someone else's hands is the absolute worst! Not that I'm a control freak or anything you understand:whistle:

It's hard not to take being turned down personally, but it seems to be par for the course at the moment.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you. Come back and update when you hear?

I was also turned down recently, after a GP's report. It wasn't even my GP, because he was on leave, it was a report from a GP at the same surgery who I haven't seen for at least seven years - way before I became disabled!

I've since got advice from CAB, who were staggered that I was turned down. I have subsequently sent a letter from my GP which says I have severe mobility problems, plus a letter from my consultant confirming this, and I am awaiting a reconsideration!

My GP situation is the reverse - it was sent to my GP but its another doctor at the surgery I see and fortunately he caught the form and completed it. He's very aware of the problems I have and how they are impacting on my daily life so I'm hopeful they will have at least received an accurate report.

Not sure how much good that will do me tho!

    Good luck jc

I just wanted to let you know I've just been awarded higher rate care and mobility on a first time claim, so it does happen! Also if your impatient (like me) you can ask over the phone- that's how I found out about mine.

Good luck again, hope you hear soon

Oh no, what a pain that they wouldn't tell you!

I'll keep my fingers crossed you hear very very soon, the waiting is the worst part lol
  • I have this theory :D - I bet you the letter arrives on Saturday. Mine always seem to arrive on a Saturday and I think that's because the enquiry line is shut. Thus you can't roar and shout down the phone to them if the letter is not to your satisfaction and have 2 days to calm down! :D

Good luck with your claim - not everyone is turned down on a first time claim, I wasn't.
