As a Scot I'm on the fence.
But there must be reasons that the Conservatives and Labour DO NOT want the union broken up.. and if you think for one minute that it's based on the fact that they 'just love' the Scots..then you're very blinkered.
"Scotland generated more cash than it spent, even during the recession, the Scottish government has said." 23 June 2010 "

"This is the fourth year in a row that Scotland has generated a current budget surplus, compared to a UK-wide deficit over the same period "

"The study, based on Treasury oil revenue forecasts and official spending figures, has calculated that, without money from the taxation of oil and gas, an independent Scotland would have an underlying deficit of £7.8billion. But when £12.2billion of oil and gas revenues are included, Scotland would have a surplus of more than £4billion" (18 May 2008)

But, as I said, I'm on the fence. I do like to question however, if Scotland is such a 'drain' on England/English taxpayers etc etc..exactly WHY, the Tories in particular, are so keen to bill themselves and the 'Conservative and Unionist' party ? Think about that for a bit...It all seems so stupid it makes me want to give up.
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid ?0 -
PS
"The Scottish government is to abolish prescription charges next April, despite huge funding pressures ahead. Nicola Sturgeon, the Scottish health secretary, will tell the SNP conference in Perth this week that the sick should not have to pay for "Labour's economic mess". 16 October 2010It all seems so stupid it makes me want to give up.

Good. If you guys are doing so well:
1) You won't mind going it alone, paying for your own unemployed because - as you say - you will be considerably richer than you are now. Excellent result.
2) If you're not prepared to go that far, then let's agree that as you are doing so well, you no longer need subsidies and grants from London.
Is that a deal?0 -
You'd be better off asking the Conservative and Unionist party leader about that. Deal ?It all seems so stupid it makes me want to give up.

You see, you're just not commiting to standing on your own two feet, are you?
I'm prepared toaccept Scotland is rich and wonderful and self-sufficient.
If that's the case, why does it need subsidies and grants from London?0 -
You need to read posts a tad more thoroughly..As a Scot I'm on the fence.I do like to question however, if Scotland is such a 'drain' on England/English taxpayers etc etc..exactly WHY, the Tories in particular, are so keen to bill themselves and the 'Conservative and Unionist' party ? You need to answer exactly why the Tories are so keen to keep handing out subsidys and grants from London. That's what I want to know..
What's your thoughts on that ? I am geniunely interested. It all seems so stupid it makes me want to give up.

Shakethedisease wrote: »Why do the English keep carping on about this ? If you want free prescriptions, uni fees etc etc then fight for it. Look to your own MPs and start there. The Scottish, Welsh and Irish devolved governments get thier allocations, and then decide on what they want to prioritise with it. Education, Care for the Elderly and prescription fees were put top of the agenda there. Simple as that. Wht's your problem with that ? That your own parliamentary representative(s) didn't do the same for you ? You're trotting out venom aimed at the wrong people quite frankly.
Because someone has to pay for them. The Scottish, Irish etc have the luxury of simply passing the tab onto the English. "fighting for it" isn't an option as the English government would have to pay anyway and where is the money gonna come from?
It was Scottish MPs who brought in tuition fees to England. Would they have voted for it if it affected Scotland as well? Of course not. Yet they had no problems saddling English students with debt.
If the government were to turn around and say "you want free stuff? Fine but you gotta pay for it". We would see an abrupt turnabout in policy.0 -

Who knows? If I was in charge, I would stop it immediately. You want autonomy and to stand on your own two feet, good luck to you.
I'd be cutting the unionist part out of the party title immediately, too.
If - as you are implying - the Scots contribute more to the UK economy than it takes (frankly, i doubt that, but i'll take your word for it), then good luck to you. Your people also want independence. Good good . we're all agreed on that.
You go with my best wishes. Good luck, and I'll now put the chequebook back in my pocket.0
