More than half an hour after reading the OP (and telling H) and having made dinner in between, I just sat down again and said "phoned Shelter indeed"

But thinking further, I'm almost surprised you didn't call the Police!

I'm only slightly podgy but I think I had a good point.

Letting agents are notorious fibbers. A verbal agreement is worth the paper it's written on so I expect the tenant is not in the position to prove they've been mislead. I can believe the agent said something reassuring and false about an issue raised by a tenant. But I can't believe a tenant could possibly expect a vacant premises in their vicinity to remain out of operation for the duration of their tenancy. They have been stitched up and have little recourse other than to put it down to experience and boycott the shop unless it sells handy and irrestible goodies...

forget the police, i would suggest go to the national press or write to the local mp, then i re-read the op and realised they was only renting so no one would be interested.

maybe a facebook campaign might help ?

it'll be hilarious if they weren't [strike]possibly[/strike] probably stopping somebody getting through who genuinely needs their help. /srsmode

but yeah, phoning Shelter because they rented a flat and the empty shop underneath is no longer empty is pretty lol. What did they think Shelter would do, magically rehome them?

Please do not feed the Trolls as you will make them fat.
  • I can understand the OPs distress. Imagine the shop tenants distress, when we looked at the premises the flat above was empty and now it is taken. He ohoned Crimestoppers who referred him to Childline as it was a more "emotive than criminal issue"

    I'm not fat, nor overweight - I'm just under-height ;-)

I think the solution is to shop the letting agents and landlord to the relevant authorities

Let's hope Lampard didn't manage to get through to Shelter and waste their time when they could have been helping someone with a real housing issue ............
