Take it that your CAB doesent have a specialist money advice unit?
Do you know if your advisor is a volunteer or a paid member of staff?

  • Probably not the most useful piece of advice I could offer, but I'd be incredibly tempted to find another CAB advisor. I find it a tad disturbing that you're worried about your mounting bills hun, and yet she expects you to contact her via text message at 10p a throw?? If you have any, then tell her she can pay your mobile phone arrears!! :p

As for the shopacheck payments... You're obviously particularly worried about this, and I should imagine the interest is pretty high so have you thought about that being the first thing to pay off when you get your increase in Tax Credit? I should imagine you'll also get it backdated

Hi sorry i havent posted for a while.Have been really busy.Got intouch with payplan as people suggested as cab werent really helping much.Upon their advice have decidid to go it alone and offer token payments until OH is back to work as they said that even cutting back we didnt have enough to offer all our creditors,so they suggested to send them all letters and offer each of them a token payment every month till we can afford a DMP which will hopefully be in the new year after OH has seen the neurologist.I posted all my letters with the token payment offers yesterday and are waiting to hear.Ive sent my first letter to the bank to try and claim back charges of £2000 so that will half my debt with them if they pay out.Its our 3 and 4 year olds birthdays this weekend so have been organising a tea party for them and ive really budgeted.I bought plain cups, plates etc.All of that only cost £3 where id normally buy the power rangers or something like that so im learning. Some of our smaller debts have cut money off the balances so im paying them this week just £20's etc but for the first time ever i feel in control and we actually have funds in the bank since we opened our basic account(weve been overdrawn for 5 years)We feel much better and are hoping we wont have to do anything drastic like bankruptcy as even if it takes us 10 years to pay off our debts we dont want to lose our home.I dont think it would solve anything as by the time our secured loan was to come off the house there would be nothing left.So payplan said it wouldnt benefit the creditors to apply for us to go bankrupt.I have alot more hope for the future since i came to this site.Thankyou to everyone thats helped with advice.

The difficulty with the Shopacheck loan is the fact that it was taken out so recently when you were already having problems.I dont mean to frighten you but this can be seen as fraud. It is unlikely that they will accept any offer & your CAB may well be unable to assist you with this debt.
When is your next appointment at CAB? Has the inc/exp been done? Have offer letters gone out yet?

Provident and Shopacheck knowingly target people who are having problems, hence their ultra-high interest rates, so I don't think that taking out this loan would be viewed as fraud (a bit naive perhaps, but not deliberate fraud) as Shopacheck would have had every opportunity to have refused the loan, based on OP's circumstances, unless OP knowingly lied to obtain the loan.
Whatever the case, Shopacheck are not exempt from the law.

Have you tried the local authority for a bus pass? When I was growing up, we were on a low income and benefits, eventually solely dependant on benefits. We moved into council housing when I was 9 after having our house repossessed, As I only had 6 months left at primary school, my parents wouldn't let me change schools to the local one, I got a bus pass that was 5p each way (granted this was 15 years ago) but I also got free school meals, when I went to secondary school I continued to have free school meals and a 20p bus pass. Maybe recheck with the school/local authority about this!

There was no lying to obtain the loan and they didnt even run a credit check. After talking to payplan im not that worried about shopacheck as there are other companies which would probably have more to say about the token payment than them.
