Can anyone tell me if its cheaper to use a slow cooker than put a dish in the gas oven on low, Cheers!

I also want to know whether it's cheaper to use a slow cooker rather than a gas oven. It does'nt say anything on the instructions. Does anyone know?

It is quite complicated to work out because you need to know how much power/gas each consumes, how long they are on for and what the cost per unit is for each of your utilities.

My utilities all have different % discounts for dual fuel, direct debit etc and my electricity is on two rates, and then you have the VAT.... so I have never bothered to work it out.

However, roughly speaking, if this 6.5l slow cooker runs on 350w (just over 1/3 of a kilowatt) for 3 hours @ 19p per kilowatt hour then it costs approx 20p to cook 6 litres of stew. Pretty cheap, IMO! :)
  • Blow it - recently bought a slow cooker (Cookworks 3.5l) was disappointed by size, thrilled with this offer, and have ordered one, but what shall i do with the first one? Need to recoup my money somehow.
  • Thanks for this, got one reserved and will go and get it tomorrow, will work well to cook chilli con carne for our bonfire night party and keep it nice and toasty

Reserved, thank you. I have a teeny one at home, but really wanted a larger one for stews ...
    (mmmm, stews, casseroles .... )
  • OH thinks he's being dead funny/romantic in buying me one of these for Christmas - little does he know I've brought him a set of saucepans from last weekend from BHS when there was a deal on lol! (oh yes - and hes got the £15 kettle to go with it!)

Bought one of these just before Christmas last year as I was having a few more people for dinner, it`s terrific!

Use the smaller one when it`s just DP and myself through the week.. but every other Sunday it`s brought out for big family dinners when all the kids are here.

Mumwithamisssion, I have two cookers on the go and often do after I have been shopping. I have a curry in one for tonights tea and a gammon joint in the other for tomorrows tea and sandwiches. 3.5l and 1.8l but I often end up cooking two days dinner and some for the freezer each time I use them.
  • Perhaps I should keep hold of it then! Thanks

It works well for me especially for the weekend when I don't want to spend a lot of time cooking would rather be doing something with OH and the children.:D
