Becles I was thinking about taht last night when that 'Too young to diet' was on.
Then they wonder why children have eating disorders? Sickening. I'm waiting on a letter saying DS1 is over weight, he has your typical rugby type body and is solid (but you can see his skinny ribs!).
Weezl... I can try?0 -
This is the problem when people calculate weight based on BMI :mad:Organised Birthdays and Christmas: Spend So Far: £193.75; Saved from RRP £963.76

Becles - that awful! When DH was a professional rugby player he was classed as obese (using BMI index). He is/was a prop and they are very bulky up top. He trained every morning, then had rugby training 3 nights a week and a game on saturdays. Phew! - yet his medical for his insurance told him he was obese :rotfl: He is in much worse shape these days fitness wise - only goes to gym on average 4 times a week, and has lost a lot of the bulk up top, but as he weighs less, is actually no longer classed as obese - yet is less healthy?!!! Its mad isn't it
I can't promise that all my replies will illicit this responser.mac, you are so wise and wonderful, that post was lovely and so insightful!

gill - I was given oilatum bath stuff on the NHS minor Ailments scheme once for LO. You can also buy it over the counter but it gets expensive. She had dry skin when younger and oilatum bath really helped. Is Diprobase the same as doublebase?
I asked for that too but he gave me the doublebase version. I have no idea whether it's the same as diprobase though, Sami might know

lol, no probs if not just tell me to bog off.:)How could I find out conclusively if asda vegetable oil contains harmful transfats?Weezl... I can try?
I've gone as far as I thought would be necessary by looking at Mccance and Widdowson food database which the dieticians use, which vindicates it as a product, but this is not proving enough. At the moment I'm thinking the only idea is for me to privately pay a food testing lab to do this for me, but I just think it's going to be a large and unnecessary expense. Do you know any other ways of testing/other food composition databases I can try?

I don't think there is any test you can do at home that would give accurate results. I only vaguly remember the tests we did none of them were any good (and crushed cereal made me run away quickly to vomit).
http://health.asda.com/greenerliving/our-policies/hydrogenated-vegetable-oils.aspx
Says that none of their oils are hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated.
My asda vegetable oil says it's refined rapeseed oil.
Some info here http://www.welch-holme-clark.com/rapeseed_oil_-_refined_spec_-_.html
Any more if beyond my knowledge, sorry.
ETA, I don't think that's right.... adding hydrogen is removing the c=c double bond but then that adds more problems... nope. I'm confused.
ETA again. I was right, sorta.
This may be interesting?
http://www.tfx.org.uk/page13.html#CANCanola / rapeseed oil
One little-known source of trans fat is canola / rapeseed oil. The trans fat occurs as a result of processing, which takes place at high temperature. The raw seed begins with a high level of beneficial omega-3 oils, however these tend to oxidise during processing producing off, rancid odours. During deodorisation, some of the omega-3 fatty acids are converted to trans.
The proportion converted to trans is highly variable - in general, UK oils have low levels of trans, however Researchers at the University of Florida at Gainesville, found that liquid canola / rapeseed oils sold in the USA contained as much as 4.6 percent trans fat. Currently this trans fat content is not usually listed on labels and consumers have no way of knowing it is present.
Thanks to generous subsidies to EU growers, this is now one of the cheapest and most widespread vegetable oils. In general, if an oil is made from anything other than canola / rapeseed, this will be stated on the label. If an oil is simply described as "vegetable oil" - it is likely to be made from canola / rapeseed. If you want to be certain of the trans content of your brand of vegetable oil, you will have to write to the manufacturer and ask.
Canola is also a popular choice for hydrogenation - further raising the trans fat levels:

BMI - I saw on tv a few days/weeks back a doctor saying they have been working on a new way to calculate body mass - fat ratio! He even said that bmi is rubbish and shouldnt be used anymore...
