I used to have to settle Aimee... There was no way you could either leave her to cry, or tell her off and make her sleep... Sometimes I'd have to sit with her, sometimes all it took was a cuddle... But at the end of the day, she needed me to be there with her, and as her Mum, I was... They're only little for a very short time, and now she's 6 I never hear a peep from her at night... And I can barely remember the sleepless nights...

Caitlyn is a whole other kettle of fish... She's better off left to settle herself... If you go in and try to settle her, she gets more wound up...
A very proud Mummy to 3 beautiful girls... I do pity my husband though, he's the one to suffer the hormones...
Krystal is so smart and funny and wonderful I am struck dumb in awe in her presence.

  • It's an Early Leaning Centre Happyland Train SM...but it is about 7 years old, it was my nephews originally :D

3 has one which is even older!!!

krystal both my 2 the more to fuss over them the less they settle ... even now zoe wont settle down if you fuss around at bed time ... the only time we had real trouble is when we moved in to our old flat from a hostel (she was one) and zoe had to get used to sleeping in her own room but only took a week of laying her back down everytime she got up and she got the picture .... jayden just gets bored and goes sleep on his own *shrug* x
    :)Still searching .....:)

  • I love that about you Krystal. You are always there with a sound piece of advice about taking time to give our babies a cuddle because they are only little for such a short time.

When Benjamin was teeny I knew you were telling the truth, but I couldn't see it. Now Benjamin is a strapping lad of 19 months I know where you are coming from and I try to bear it in mind.

I don't want to be that mummy who can't take time for cuddles with her son.

As it is, when I get a big cuddle I say 'Mummy loves cuddles, cuddles make mummy...'
    and Benjamin shouts
    'HAPPY!!!!'

    :D

You made me laugh yoghurt over my screen. Probably a good thing there isn't a smiley for that ;)

A smiley for a rough sack?? Or vomiting yoghurt onto a monitor? Madness!
Hmm - I am a bit of a coaxer and will spend *some* time coaxing Benjamin back to sleep if he wakes. But he mostly sleeps so if he wakes/doesn't settle then there is usually a reason for it.

But at the same time I am quite firm when he is taking the mick...and I have never spent more than 20 minutes shusshing and coaxing (I don't think).

There is no way in the world I would be spending hour on Benjamin's bedroom floor - for starters he is less likely to sleep with me in the room and I sleep starkers so I get very cold when I go to settle him!!!

I am 100% coaxer - and we have had assorted woes in our history of sleep - but E is pretty good about sleeping through the night nowadays, and for a long time now if he has woken it's a 3 minute job to resettle him. No need for being stern til they're old enough to really be deliberately difficult out of mischief - I generally reckon if a <3 year old wakes in the night they are usually going to be genuine in their reasons iyswim.
However one thing this thread illustrates very clearly is that many different parenting styles all work :) probably best to do what is comfortable for you yourself I suppose.
(I also sleep naked and I prefer the summer months for baby-comforting in the nursery! :). Can't let MFD out-prurient me :A)

ETA One of our fav things about Elijah is he so affectionate and so loves the cuddles :) whenever either of us groan or exclaim cuz we drop something or anything like that, he rushes over from wherever he is in the flat to say "Ohhhhhhhhh.... CUGGLES" and clings to us. And in the mornings when I send him in to wake OH, he rushes in, then very gently edges up to her pillow, lies his cheek against hers and says "Hi mama... cuggles :)". It is very pleasing!

MFD, I am liking the ".....happy!" :) that is very awesome. You teach him well :)

    'night all.
  • Not sure I agree about an under 3 being genuine in their reasons for waking...sometimes it is just habit and whilst 'genuine' it is not necessary and therefore needs to be broken IMHO.

But E is undoubtedly cute as a button!!!

    'night all.

    It amuses me!!

Whatever I teach him he refuses to repeat for hubby. Every day when I pick him up we sing wheels on the bus and he sings one line of 'round and round', 'swish swish swish', 'beep, beep, beep' and 'chat, chat, chat' on his own....for hubby he will reuctantly do 'beep, beep' and that is it *rolleyes*

    G'night john-boy :D
