Help improving performance of my computer

Options
Hi, I've been playing football manager 2010 on my acer aspire 5051 AWXMI but it does take quite along time for it to process at times-in the game it gives me a 1 out of 5 for my computer performance and game speed 11/2 out of 5 are there any programs that I can run to help improve the performance of my computer -I've got AVG 2011 free version at the moment.

How much RAM does your laptop have and what OS is it using?

    Some Guidance here.

By the way, you won't find many fans of AVG software here so you should also consider uninstalling that and using the FREE versions of Avira AntiVir or Avast 5.

best things to do to start off with are the basics

get update and run malwarebytes antimalware to check for any nasties which have gotten past AVG (post log on here for people to check over)

get update and run hijack this and post the report up here so people can check for un-nessesary programs

get ccleaner and give you system a good clean out

use a defrag program (one of the usual recommendations is defraggler) this can sometimes help although some people say they never notice a difference

next would be to look at a RAM upgrade as all the information i can see states the system only has 512mb of ram (http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/-/653/860/-/3275096/Acer-Aspire-5051AWXMi-Turion-64-Mobile-Technology-MK-36-2-GHz-14-1-TFT-Laptop-Notebook/Product.html) something like this shoudl do the trick http://www.ebuyer.com/product/142421 or http://www.ebuyer.com/product/142013
    Drop a brand challenge
on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
    10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
    20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)
  • Thanks for your help I'm a novice when it comes to these things -when you say post log can you explain how I do that do you mean cut and paste whatever comes up , sorry but this is all new to me

How much RAM do you have installed?

I would suggest a clean install without all of those ACER 'add ons' or to let closed run through your laptop with a fine tooth comb.

My girlfriend has the same laptop, though with Bluetooth etc. I did a clean install and added a 1GB module to take it to 1.5GB.

The fact that you are running AVG against all the advice plastered all over this board, indicates that you are entirely hopeless. :)
  • Thanks for your advice -yes I am hopeless but I am changing to avast 5 -and I am going to get rid of all that acer stuff -I hope that I'm doing the right thing

rapport is probably part of the problem, + disable defender realtime scanning

uninstall http://inboxtoolbar.com/search/ie.aspx?tbid=80150, and/or reset ie to defaults, under tools, internet options, advanced

leave the acer stuff installed, but you can disable them running at startup using autoruns
