best things to do to start off with are the basics

..which is not all the gumpf you've just put as the first steps.

Step 1 on anything older than 2 years old: HOW MUCH RAM HAS IT GOT?

Start, Control Panel, System and it'll tell you.

Leave CCleaner installed but note you'll need to check regularly if it's been updated. There is a link in the botton right-hand corner of the program's interface which you can click on.

Leave the avast Update Checker alone as that will now be your front line defence against infections.

Uninstall anything to do with AVG and Norton. There is a tool to remove Norton remnants here click on the appropriate link. Similar story with AVG - but first we need to establish whether your OS is 32bit or 64 bit. Do you have a "My Computer" icon on your desktop? If so, right click it, then click "Properties" and read and copy what it says, post the info here.

I've gotta disappear now as I'm working but will check back later on progress made.

    Ok, good.

You have already run a Hijack This scan (post #9) so I think you mean "Malwarebytes" ? The installation usually creates a desktop icon but if not, click "Start" "Programs" and see if it's listed. If so you can run it from there but ENSURE you update it first. After it has updated, click "Perform Quick Scan". When it's finished click the OK to show results. Make sure everything is selected (ticks in boxes) and then click "Remove selected". When it's finished it'll open a scan log. With your mouse select all the text, righ click "copy" and then come back to this thread and right click "paste" into the thread.

While you're waiting for a response, run CCleaner scan and delete everything it finds.

Your laptop could do with at least another 1GB of RAM memory, Vista runs better with 2GB of RAM. Thes best place to buy RAM is from a company called "Crucial" at www.crucial.com/uk/ I would suggest rather than buying another 1GB RAM module that you buy a "matched" pair of 1GB modules. Currrent price is £36.41 for the pair.

    Will check in again later.

windows defender should give you the option of updating, if you open up defender there should be an option to update

    ccleaner cant really help,

what do you mean "dont seem to able to update java" do you mean it just doesnt update or an error pops up

You really need to upgrade to 2GB of RAM.

AVG is rubbish so uninstall it and you really shouldn't be running more than one anti-virus at a time. You're running THREE. That means every time a file is opened or run, it is being scanned 3 times. In addition there may be conflicts between AVG, Avast and Norton that make them ineffective. CCleaner can be set to run on demand rather than every time windows starts.
