Cant you see my car? Are you blind?

Sorry about the rant.

Parked my car where I usually do.

Some lovely man in a white van decided that it would look better with white stripes down the sound and caved in.

The driver door is so messed up it wont close properly and rear passenger door isnt much better.

I would just like to thank the driver that did this and drove off without leaving any details.

I will make calls and will try and find you. Its not a main road not many vans would need to come down here.

I do have a question, do I need to inform my insurance, depends on cost to whether I claim but I cannot see it being cheap?
I all have learnt is from others on many sites.

  • That's an unpleasant thing to do unfortunately it happens. Good luck finding who did it.
Nothing to see here, move along.
  • This may sound a stupid question and appoligises if it does, however, other than the white marks how do you know it was a white van?

With the high of the markings it could aslo have been a SUV, as there is a school down there, they have managed to crush the panel it by scraping along the side and hitting the door handles, when I got back home I put my car against it and it would have hit much lower than what it did.

Technically you are meant to inform you're insurance company, and not doing so would put you in breach of their T&C's. However, until you know what you're going to do I'd not speak to them. The possible solutions are:

    1. If you find the offending driver and there are witnesses that can confirm catagorically that they caused the damage then make a claim direct with 3rd party's insurance co, but make sure you inform you're own ins co of what is going on
    2. You don't find the offender and need to sort it out yourself - I'd find out how much it's going to cost to get repaired, then make a decision as to whether to inform your ins co. If it can be done cheaply with replacment doors off Ebay or a scrappy, then get it done yourself and your premiums won't rise as a result of a claim. If the cost is too high then you'll need to claim on your own insurance policy, which will result in higher future premiums but at least you'll get your car properly sorted.

If you know what time it happened, go down to the main road at that time and look for damaged vehicles, the offender would be unlikely to drive down your street again anytime soon.

Oh and a tip for parking at the side of the road.....

Turn your wheels to point outwards, this gives the appearance of a car that's a) occupied and b) likely to pull out.

The reason I asked is, if it was a white van, there could be a chance it was delivering goods to somebody. Therefore, perhaps ask around the neighbourhood, if anybody got a delivery that day? and more important who was the courier?

Also and this is one is a tricky one (as a bloke you don't want to be caught hanging around a school:eek:) but at school closing time take a walk past and have a look for a white SUV and if you find one look for any tell tale scuff marks down the side.

If the damage is as you claim it'll likely be into the thousands to repair properly. So I can't see it being anything other than an insurance claim.

PS. You need to call the police! Leaving the scene after an accident is a serious offence!
  • Or even a man driving? More likely to be a woman doing her make up or something........;)
Politicians and diapers have one thing in common. They should both be changed regularly, and for the same reason.
