I'm flummoxed too! I save up each week to go to the hairdressers and I make sure I go every 8 weeks. It costs me £15 a time. I'm not in the least bit vain (it's short and I don't brush it :o), but I spent too many years looking like Catweazel to want to have it growing uncontrollably again.

Well my take on this is that if I make sure I've got a decent haircut - then it would take an hour or two to turn from "resident scruff" to "elegant/well turned-out". Its good to know that - with the haircut dealt with - its possible to "brush up well" if occasion demands...:)

This is what I tell my DH when he moans about his boring packed lunch, and everybody else is buying lunch. He hasn't a clue about their finances - maybe they have paid off their mortgage/live in council houses/live with parents, etc.

Hmmm...well in my workplace - I notice I get envious looks/the odd comment about the lunches I take into work with me. However - I'm looking at what they take in (NOT saying a word) and thinking "Hmm...individual yogurts/packets of crisps/readymade sandwiches/etc - betcha their lunch is more expensive than mine..."

Well - my take on the troll v. not troll debate is "NO" - O.P. is definitely NOT a troll.

IF she chooses to wear a wig rather than get haircuts - then thats entirely her business.

There was a sharp comment - and then it went into that turn of thought.

I DO sometimes wonder if everyone realises that many people get hurt by a "sharp" comment - rather than being someone who gives as good as they get in that respect. Even the most apparently strong/confident of us may not be in the habit of conversing in sharp comments and may get hurt if one comes up.

Totally, I love the comments I get about my food - often people saying it smells so good etc, although some people turn their nose up at leftovers, this is always my lunch! Cheaper and waay tastier.

Absolutely :T But as soon as any of us posts on a public forum, asking if they are the most frugal person on here, they invite clarification from other posters :) IMO, that is all that everyone has been doing ;)

I actually read the 'who is more frugal than me' completely differently to what's been suggested by some on this thread.

The OP came across to me as feeling fed up and deprived and wanting to hear from other frugalees so she could feel a bit less alone and isolated.

I also agree (with the less cynical posters) about the wig comment - no mention of why, including the fairly common assumption here that it was to save money, just her comment that it was saving her money.

As to why she hasn't come back, to be honest I wouldn't bother if I were her. I know you're all a nice bunch but it's not that obvious from this thread and as a newbie, why bother trying again.

    Very true.

O.P. - if you read this do please ignore the sharp comments and some making troll comments. Most people on here dont make comments like that - so please ignore the few who cant resist doing so and dont let them put you off coming back.

I read many of the comments on here with dismay:(

I personally find one of the MSE personal tips to be very distasteful, but I don't feel the need to tell the users that, nor accuse them of being a troll:(

Has any of you stopped to think the lady might have afro hair & hairdressing IS expensive.

    Can I interject?

I'm black and getting my hair into a shape suitable for work costs me £40 a month. In it's natural state, it is thick and frizzy but I'm trying not to straighten it which would cost me even more. I have it set in twists monthly and my current hairdresser is the cheapest I can find in the area. A wig would actually save me a wodge!

Maybe the OP is in a similar position?

I expect the thought literally never crossed some peoples mind that O.P. might have Afro style hair. I know I just assumed she was referring only to having a trim at intervals - and had not realised that her hairdressing requirements might be rather more expensive than that.

    Ooopppsssss...:o.

That is a very valid point actually.
  • What a cool thread! Let's be positive and assume the OP isn't a troll as it makes a great discussion on whether a wig can save money, whatever the reason for having one!

    Andrea :)
