Talk me into selling my books.

I have a question...
My friend has just had a kindle for her birthday and raves about it, my worry was always I wouldnt like the feel of it and its not the same as a proper book. She loves hers though.
I have a reader on my iphone (stanza) possibly, its too small to use really but I have used it in the past when a book has been released in the USA but not here. In those cases I have *cough* aquired *cough* the books for my phone but I wondered if its possible to *cough* aquire *cough* kindle books?0 -
I'm sure it is, pt, but we wouldn't be allowed to discuss it here! We don't 'do' illegal.Signature removed for peace of mind0

I hate getting rid of books! I have 2 billy bookshelves full, some are double stacked too. Mostly fiction, some better quality than others. If I get a book from a charity shop and think, I will never, ever, read that again, I put them in a box to either attempt to sell online or go back to said shop. But if I even vaguely enjoyed a book, I will keep it.
The thing for me is I enjoy being the person who people come to when they want a new book to read, I love recommending authors and books to people and lending them out. I often don't get them back though, but I'm resigned that and never lend out my faves! Like you aliasojo I love my matching "runs" of Rankin, Cornwell (she's gone pants though), Kathy reichs, and series like HP, LOTR, northern lights, twilight... as well as all kinds of others.
I have sold books on Amazon marketplace; this started when I was given a box of old engineering maths textbooks by guy at church when he heard I was studying maths. I didn't get on with that type of maths, though, so i offered them back to him, but he didn't want them and said I could sell them if I wanted to. I made quite a lot of cash on them on Marketplace, some were current editions and still in use for engineering courses. The poster who said about her husband's maths texts - do have a look on Amazon to see how much they go for, that might persuade him to part with them! The thing with textbooks is there aren't 100,000 people trying to sell them, like there are for most paperbacks, so you can set a fair price and still be likely to sell it within a few weeks.0 -

Bad cough you got there pullip. :rotfl: I'd be interested to hear if you get a good solution for it.morg_monster wrote: »....... Cornwell (she's gone pants though.....
Funnily enough I had that very same thought just the other day. :beer:Herman - MP for all!0 -
My worry is that I'd 'lose' them in those months: we already have multiple copies of some books because the boys wanted to read eg Catch 22, and although we knew we had it SOMEWHERE it couldn't be found. Then it was ... twice ...
I know I'd have to use a sealed box which no-one was allowed to even peek into! :rotfl:
That happened to me once, I'd listed some books on GM and by the time someone wanted to buy one of them, I couldn't find it! It's very easy to list books on GM but it can take months for them to sell so you have to not lose them while you're waiting.
I do try to get rid of books if I know I'm not going to read them again, I give them to charity shops sometimes as you get rid of them quickly and it helps the charity. We have two floor to ceiling bookcases from Ikea in the alcoves of our living room.0 -
I had hundreds of books when we moved to this house, then I discovered the local library - it feeds my book addiction, as I don't really mind what I read within reason, and I can get up to 10 out at any one time, so I can read authors I wouldn't buy and stop after the first chapter if it's really not worth the read.
If you really love books you'll join the library, if you just like to be seen to be a reader by visitors to your home ( I admit I liked having all my books on display) you'll keep the paperback fiction in all the nooks and crannies and continue to buy more with the weekly shop.
2 for £7 every week adds up to a weekend break over the space of a year's shopping;)Member of the first Mortgage Free in 3 challenge, no.19

Think the visitor bit is a bit unfair ailuro.
All my family have a library card. Daughter gets books out regularly but I can rarely find the kind of thing I want. It's a very small place and is only open at certain times and a few days a week. Yes, they will order books in from other libraries but on occasion I have asked for something, I was told there was a waiting list.Tbh, I can't be faffed with the hassle of asking and waiting. I also don't tend to have a wish list so usually wouldn't have a specific thing to ask for, I prefer to browse the shelves and pick up what I fancy at the time. Again, something I don't tend to do at my library because it's so pants for my preferred type of reading material.

I used to work at Oxfam and there was a man who used to lecture at Birmingham Uni, but had subsequently gone a little bit mad in his old age.
He used to count the money he had left in his pocket and spend it all on books (he believed no book should be wasted or thrown out), haggling over the price to try and get one more book.
He lived in a 3 bed terrace which was subsiding as all rooms bar one (which he lived in) were filled with books. Absolute mad and he smelt awful!
You don't want your house to subside do you(;War does not determine who is right - only who is left.0 -
I can't get rid of books, and I dislike electronic ones.
I like the artwork, and covers- My Elisabeth Haydon have the original Luis Royo artwork, and look fantastic.
I just counted 4 copies of one Raymond E Feist book- but all are different versions, one original hardback, one first edition, one signed- I can't get rid of that.....
I would read 2-3 books a week, very easily. Favourite authors? Terry Pratchett, Wilbur Smith, Stpehen Donaldson, Lisa Nelson Finnegan, Raymond E Feist, David Eddings, Eric Flint, Catherine Asaro, Holly Lisle, Andre Norton- I could go on all day!
Husband decided recently we'd be better moving house than getting rid of books= he shares my passion too.
Sorry, that's not actually helping you- I can't, I hate getting rid of books.0
