foxyuk, I disagree about phishing or a virus (mentioned by the poster who first replied but who has since deleted their post!), although I suppose if there are still people out there good for £10,000 credit limits who are daft enough to fail to protect their pc, or unlucky enough to fail to spot a phish then it is possible.

But I don't believe that is usually the way fraudsters get full access to your account and new cards issued. Are you a company director? Your full name and address and DoB are very easily available to fraudsters if you are, unless you have availed yourself of new protection available as an option in director's registration but only in the last year or so.

More likely I think is that someone has indeed passed on 'some' insider info e.g. mothers maiden name, credit limit, account number for money. It is a known vulnerability amongst all bank workers. Sadly I am told that many bank workers believe it or not are as in as financially dire straits as Joe Public. Temptation has been known to get the better of some I am told. Hopefully not many, but who really knows? Then that illegally obtained personal data can be mixed with legally obtainable companies house data for example if you or your neighbourhood have been targeted. I have no direct evidence but my experience tells me that the trade in this type of data for attacks like the one against you may be highly organised.

I was victim of impersonation like you earlier his year because CallCredit, the #3 Credit Reference Agency in the UK, had allowed a impersonator to obtain my full credit report online. New cards and in some cases new PINs were issued by the idiot banks after the fraudster had called them to say he'd lost his wallet and wanted cards stopped. He knew a lot about my affairs and who to call of course because he had many years worth of data courtesy of CallCredit. So the banks immediately obliged with new cards, and crazily, PINs.

Luckily I noticed there were problems within two days and managed to restrict the damage. Evenso, thousands of pounds were lost inextricably within 7 days of that report being obtained online. Typically the transactions are at computer retailers and ATMs.

I only found out about the CallCredit angle by chance over 3 months later. Up to that point I was racking my brain about how or who and had to change all my passwords and security info, and visit banks with extra ID to unlock accounts. It was an enormous pain.

You might like to contact CallCredit to see if they have an online account in your name. I know someone in the same street who was hit the exact same way at about the same time, but in my case my address was left the same as it was clearly realised as an interceptable address by the fraudster.

You may even find that the Hull address is merely some unfortunate like me who has an interceptable address either because the box is easily dipped or the postman or the sorting office is bent. In fact after about a month I received two CC bills for people like you at my address (one was a Barclaycard, the other was MBNA). I reported them immediately to the banks concerned.

You should press your local police for a crime number but do not expect them to investigate because the police have an agreement with the banks that you and me are not the victims. The victims are the banks :rotfl:. Make sure you complete the forms that Barclaycard send you. You can speed up the process if you fax them back. You will get your money back no further questions. If you have other card accounts then contact the issuers and get them extra secured. Card accounts are more vulnerable than bank accounts I was told. Sign up for an alerts service with Equifax or Experian (CreditExpert) (#1 and #2 CRAs in UK). Don't however waste money on so-called Identity Fraud Protection at banks. They ask for about £70 a year, and only about £12 reaches the insurer. Besides, in your case it would be like bolting the stable door ...

    Daft isn't it?

    You have my complete sympathy.
  • wow, i cant believe things like this really happen. You have my full sympathy, sorry I am no help but wanted to say thanks for making me aware of this as I often sign up here there and anywhere!

Well had sleepless night feel sick. I am not a company director only place I will be registered is landlord registration , I also do not get statements as now paperless

I have been using eset nod32 and nothing gets past it. I have now added avg on to it also. I only buy from reputale sites ie seetickets . Ticketmaster etc however most of details are already preset on account

I went into credit expert and can see where the !!!!!!! changed my address to. Only other time I use card is to book flights, hotels and reateraunts overseas. I think I have used my chip and pin 4 times in 2 years and don't take cash out and clear balance every month

I'm convinced it's inside job. Now I need t wait for India to call me and police coming tonight due to all this I can see me binning my c/cards avoiding online banking and go back to a bank book. I feel totally sick

Whilst its easy for me to say.
I have had this with emails which is very serious as caused so much problems.

Anyway avg works well and is very good I use that.

I also weekly use http://www.safer-networking.org/index2.html spy bot.

It might be a simple mistake that will get sorted.

I shall tell you a little story about my parents. They bank with Natwest my mum has a mobile phone. But her phone is alwyas at the bottom of her bag never on, women never answer the phone to me anyway!

Their new cards were being delivered from Natwest. There were removed at sorting office by a 'nasty person'. They went on a spending spree on the trains & tesco. a few other places as well.

Then one sunday moring whilst she was out shopping we get a phone cal needing to speak the her urgently. Very rude person. has she got a mobile, no. they ended up hanging up. They tried again, mother doesnt do finances, so dad spoke and refused to talk to them. The nasty girl needed a password or something to buy more products.

Checked online later found all the shopping they had done. Tesco were the rudest in returning the money. Everyone else okay. Had to go to the police station usual problems.

It wasnt our post men who comes to the door. We get on well with them. But its was the sorting office!!

This is called "account takeover" and it happens all the time and not just to Barclays but all banks suffer- don't panic too much and let Barclays deal with it. Have you used your card recently in a petrol station (I won't mention the nationality-the banks are aware)?

i dont use my credit card in petrol stations

ok just off phone,,,barclaycard uk fraud dept called me... they will send out dispute form with all transactions and i have to sign and return they will refund imediately.
told me no need to see police as barclaycard are liable and police do not get involved.

barclaycard security question is mothers maiden name and woman said easy for people to access family trees to pass this.. now i have password, i asked why do barclaycard wait till fraud happens before they change to password???

woman was telling me that a fraudster can hold details for max 2 years and many of them are employed in legitimate companies on short term basis

    scary
