Have a look at this item 160485177500 I bid £5.50 it went up to £6 and then I was offered second chance! Legit or schill?

A second chance offer would not be suspicious to me if a seller had possible duplicate items.

For that sort of item i suspect he has crate loads and everyone above a certain price got a SCO.

Just a few days ago I bid on a leather captains chair it started at £75 after two days I was winning at a bid of £127 (my max £130) The "buy it now price" was £225

Yesterday with 4 hours to go it was withdrawn from sale, so much for ebay's !!!!!!!! about entering into a legal binding contract, the contract might be binding to buyers it certainly doesn't apply to sellers, this is the second time it has happened to me:mad:

Why would you bid days before the end of an auction is beyond me.

You guys need to learn the art of bidding to win.

Bid late (last 15 seconds or so or use a sniper) and bid high, don't fanny around.

The only time to bid early might be to get rid of BIN bu you only bid the minimum and keep your real bid for later.

Also try bid early and bid low. The same items come up on ebay again and in the end you win one.

...and you wont worry about losing many times along the way.

Thanks everyone, I DO know how ebay works, I am suspicious as my highest bid was not too far from what I would expect to pay for a similar item full price. I was also surprised that someone else would be watching that closely as in fairness the table isn't that unique. It is possible someone decided to bid £50 at the same time (or very soon after me). I just find it fishy.

I sometimes notice that if I send an email to the buyer with a question about an item (usually with no bids), then they reply, and about the same time there is a bid put on it.

I think the buyer gets my email, thinks 'oh someone is interested, I'll get a shill bid on, then when they do bid, its likely to go up to their max bid straight away and therefore they will not get it for 99p'....but then I am cynical, and paradoid:o

It works the other way. One girl bid twice on an item I was selling and then TWICE retracted her bid saying she entered the wrong amount! I didn't think bids could be withdrawn but some people have found a way!

Any bidder can withdraw a bid, they just need to choose one of the allowed reasons, most just choose 'entered the wrong amount' If they bid in the last `2 hours then they can actually only withdraw their bid within an hour of placing it.

The number of bid retractions show on the buyers feedback page.

  • This is a well known scam. The seller has either got an accomplice to bid or has bid himself under another ID (not allowed!). The idea is to get the price up. After the auction, the seller and his accomplice agree not to complete the sale and the underbidder gets offered the item at a grossly inflated price.
