As already stated, don't use WEP if your router can accept WPA encryption.
The manual for your router will explain what encryption is offered on that model.
Why do you need to install a hard drive?

That's fine. You can use the same code, though make sure the encryption level is not actually WEP.
To be honest it's quite unlikely that someone who try to 'hack' their way on to your Internet connection, but WEP is better than no password at all.

to be honest i dont think im that bothered about someone hacking into my pc through wireless. (im not saying i am not bothered about security issues) I live in a little rural town and to be honest there isnt people sat outside our homes trying to hack into peoples computers, maybe im being nieve and hacking happens a different way.

They won't hack into your computer, but rather use your internet connection. They could do anything - including something illegal - which could cause you a lot of bother in the future.

yeh i understand that but they need to be close by dont they, so really need to be sat outside my house??

The range can be between 30 and 100 metres from the router.

Your neighbours could be using your connection and not paying for their own. Without proper security, you can't be sure.

Also, you probably have a download limit on your package (e.g. 40gb). Someone could use all this up within a few hours, therefore causing you to receive a very large bill.

There are also websites dedicated to producing lists of unsecured wireless networks - this is something known as wardriving.
